    This is rather interesting!

Travelling faster than the speed of light may be possible. In our everyday existence we experience 3 dimensions, 4 if you include time itself. String theory asserts that there could be up to 11 dimensions, which are not discernible to us. Light is constrained by the mathematics of our 3D world but we don't know anything about the mathematics of hypothetical dimensions, think of the universe in 3D as a slice of bread in a loaf, other slices are other dimensions and things like neutrinos can pass through these, which is a potential explanation of them moving faster than light, as they can pass from one dimension to another where the speed of light may be much higher. This in turn could explain wormholes and fast travelling throughout the universe.

Some of the thinking behind some of modern physical theories is mind boggling. I remember listening to Prof. Peter Atkins and he was arguing that matter could be made from nothing, our primitive brains struggle to grasp it but I can see how it could happen but I am excited to see the developments over the next 50 years within Quantum Physics and Theoretical/Physical Chemistry

If the aliens are looking for intelligence outside of their worlds, they really shouldn't bother with our planet.

Doesn't time slow as you approach the speed of light though? By the time someone has travelled here from a distant galaxy our own technology may well have surpassed theirs. And the home planet of the aliens could've upgraded their own significantly and prepared another craft to send to Earth, while on board the first ship they've barely had time to put the kettle on. If the second ship they sent was much faster than the first, the people on the first voyage could arrive on Earth only to find their own children had beaten them there. :D

I can't see it being possible to develop such spacecraft though, to power that kind of craft for that period of time would be impossible IMO, to make it safe for the inhabitants against temperatures and G forces would be impossible, and then nimble enough to avoid space junk, planets, asteroids, stars and then to orbit it's target planet undetected to carry out observations, and then either be able to make a landing or accelerate back towards the speed of light to return home or move onto another planet, it will never happen.

That overseasTOON is an alien? I would never have guessed, thanks for the heads up Tash. <ok>

I wasn't really wondering if the universe will end, which is inevitable.

I was more intrigued in what would replace it...

<laugh> I suppose that could happen. I think that if you spend 1 hour travelling at 99% speed of light then in that time 1 year would of gone by on Earth.

Couple of clips that are interesting on the subject,

One possibility is another universe, identical to the first. It is called the Big Bouce theory.

Has anyone ever read Joe Haldeman's 'The Forever War'? Anyone with even a passing interest in sci-fi should, it's absolutely epic. In fact, even if you don't like sci-fi at all, it's still a great book!

It deals with some of these issues you're talking about here, like time dilation and it's relative effects. The soldiers return to Earth after a short service to find that society has changed dramatically in the meantime, encounter enemies with advanced technology from 'the future', etc.

It's generally perceived to be Haldeman's take on his own experience in the Vietnam War, so is really quite melancholic and reluctant. Thoroughly recommended!

I really dont see why they couldnt, if you take our time line, the industrial revolution was only 250 years ago, we had very little before that, now we can live about another 40 years on life expectancy, we have DNA, Nuclear power, computers, Internet, been to space and to the moon, if you said this to someone 250 years ago, they would have put you in the nut house.

So in that respect, the Aliens just need to be about 2,000 years ahead of us (which is not a lot in the grand scheme of time) to get spacecraft etc and visit here, I am not saying they are, most are man made or Meteorogical phenomena but to say they cant do it, is a bit silly, expecially if we can probably do it in 1000-2000 years or so. (if we keep increasing our knowledge like we have for the past 250 years)

Planet sized aliens is a pretty amazing thought. Given how small Earth is there could be creatures the size of our moon walking around some enormous planet somewhere. Preparing to attack <yikes>.
