Go for it Geo, pretty sure you'll get a lot out of it as others have said. I stopped playing in my late 20s and at 49 decided on having a go at playing vets. Now nearing the end of my 3rd season and loving it. Our training is open to all which is great as some of us take our sons and other young lads come down - ages range between 14 and 60. And I've started training another night with a bunch in their late 30s early 40s. And as others have said there's the social side to it too
Yeah I’ll give it ago I think, iam surprised there isn’t a vets 5 league anywhere. I’d prefer 5’s ideally, there’s a vets 5’s tournament at bottesford town in June. I know of at least 2-3 teams from hull entering it.
Just get playing with the team you found local and then sort out the rest once you're in - then in the future you might end up setting up your own fives team and it will occupy your time on and off the pitch. It's what happened with me, after training youth and adults for nearly twenty years, my daughters bullied me into re-starting playing rugby when I turned 50, putting my money where my mouth was. Men need physical activity at all ages in our lives - it's what we were created for. I'm going through a £300 do it yourself divorce now my children have left home and it's good to have something else to focus on.
I’d be very interested in playing for a team, I turned 36 this year and can still run the wings. Haven’t played in goal for two decades so been playing wide left instead. Thankfully less wide than I was ten years ago. More than anything else, it would be great for my mental health. I’ll put this up too: North Ferriby run a six a side league on a Monday night. All age groups play and girls can also play (we have a young lass who sometimes plays for us), it’s a mixture of retired players, 18 year old whizz kids, Ferriby reserves and completely useless players. It’s not exactly hardcore and it’s very laid back. Contact North Ferriby FC about it if you are interested in playing and want to enter a team, I think if you google Ferriby six a side the contact details come up. Anybody willing to try can message me and you can play for us to see what the standard is like. Paul Foot captains his team, Duke have a team, there’s a student team and we’ve had Ferriby Veterans, Hull Pirates Ice Hockey, Ferriby Ladies and various other groups play. Would strongly recommend if you can spare the time and get a team together. And yes, the bar is open for refreshments (with Sky).
I play for NF walking football team TT, unfortunately not played for England but kept the phone on recently just in case Garreth called. Can highly recommend it although it took me a good 9 months to get used to not running - or at least not being caught running Hopefully catch up with you at a future match/tournament
You certainly wouldn’t be short of managers who know more than Guardiola, Klopp and other ones. Success nailed on.
Ended drawing the match 2-2 which was a good result as we had a couple of elderly ladies making up our numbers for the final third of the game. I may have got it wrong about NF having two England WF players, it could have been Cottingham who I saw playing at NF, they certainly have one who maybe guests for both clubs. I first got into it at Tigers Trust, Bonus Arena, when I retired and after my heart attack. I didn't know what to expect or what standard they play too but found it very accomodating with players of all ages and abilities taking part. One highlight with the TT lads was going to Manchester to play a team who said they represented Manchester City, they were all fans and played in their colours. We played two games, drew one 1-1 and beat them 6-1 in the second game. We played in Hull City colours, Not having played for years I soon torn my calf muscle doing not much at all, and had to walk on crutches for six weeks, so anyone starting up from scratch after a long lay off should be wary of that. But I recommend it to anyone who enjoys the game but thinks they are too old to take part. I'm into my 70th year so qualify for the 70+ age group, and I have played in open age games which are hard work and not as enjoyable, and it's as competitive as it was when I was 18. They just don't kick you quite as hard. So morale of this is you are never too old, and its later then you think so if you fancy it, have a go. UTT.
Maybe Rosie would fancy the gig, think his slow play and sidewards passing would suit a bunch of over 36 year olds that aren’t fit
