Wednesday fighting for Championship survival and us trying to stay in the promotion race, its a must win for both Clubs but if confidence has returned after the Cardiff match and we can keep the ball away from Ugbo we can win this. I hope the coaches have been drilling the defence all week to stop these goals being conceded because its not always possible to outscore the opposition every time.
It’s never been addressed all season fieldmarshall, why will this week be any different? Wednesday will get chances, hopefully we’ll outscore them!
I notice that Wednesday have won 4 of their last 5 games, exactly like us. They will scrap for everything. We need to rise to the occasion and get back to winning ways.
I see some people say " weve only lost 5 games all season so we must be doing something right " but its only because weve been scoring quite a few goals which makes it look that way, the fact remains we have only won sometimes thanks to the goalscorers bailing out the defence sometimes having to score 4 goals to win, if we want to progress somethings got to change.
5 defeats all season, outscoring our opponents more often than not. what a season FM, just remember the turgid 1 nils under MM, the football under the rest over the last few years. I am, unfortunately old enough to have been to the games in the 70s & parts of the 80s. brilliant football.it was a joy to watch win lose or draw, which is what we are getting now.
I don’t mind being open and having a heavy goals against column and taking risks that occasionally backfire. What I do mind is all the sloppy, soft goals that we concede week in, week out no matter the quality of the opposition. Teams know that if they get in and around our box they’ll likely score some goals and that encourages them to have a go. We need to get to a situation where opposition forwards feel demotivated when they face us. The disappointing thing is there’s no sign of improvement at the back.
One wonders if bringing Walton back, might inject more confidence, a stronger commanding presence in the goal mouth.
I don't think it's McKenna's style to make one player the scapegoat. To many that's how it would look.
I too go back to the 70s and 80s i also went to the Eufa Cup Final and remember those brilliant days, i also remember the days when my partner and i would be the only ones sitting on our row and as you say the football was turgid, so as much as its been brilliant entertainment for the last 2 seasons our defence is a worry with giving away soft goals especially, and if we want to get to the promised land it has to improve, we cant rely on scoring more than the opposition as was the case at Cardiff.
I’ve been going since late 80s / early 90s so I’ve seen some decent attacking sides - Lyall, Burley, Royle, Magilton (thought we played decent football especially when he took over and he was treated very badly by the club) and now McKenna. Also seen some absolute dross - pretty much anyone not named and I know what I’d rather watch, yes we concede sloppy goals that we shouldn’t and last Saturday was particularly disappointing but I love watching us play this way. Think I’ve said before, my nephew became a season ticket holder half way through last season. He has seen at least 2 goals in every game - usually more (we missed the 0-0 game with qpr) and long may it continue. I would much rather play this way and lose than try and nick a 1-0 win playing defensively.
I am lucky enough to go back to watching the great side of the 1960-61 campaign, with Ray Crawford bagging 40 goals and his sidekick Ted Phillips 30! If I am not mistaken, they won promotion from the old 2nd division, to the 1st that year. Lets do it again, 63 yrs later!
