Liam Manning makes Scott Twine admission as Bristol City head coach delivers injury latest
On-loan Burnley playmaker Scott Twine was an unused substitite as Bristol City beat Swansea City 1-0 at Ashton Gate

Bristol City head coach Liam Manning was ready to bring Scott Twine on against Swansea City to try and force a late winner but Rob Dickie’s goal ensured the playmaker remained on the bench with his injury comeback delayed for another week.

Twine has made just one appearance for the Robins since signing on loan from Premier League Burnley until the end of the season, and has been plagued with a quad issue for the last seven weeks.

The 24-year-old was an unused substitute last month against QPR before suffering a small setback but he made his return to the matchday squad on Sunday and as the game drifted towards the final 20 minutes, with the score at 0-0, he warmed up in front of the Lansdown Stand in preparation for his introduction, only to then sit back down on the bench when Dickie converted Joe Williams’ cross in the 73rd minute.

Given he had only been sporadically involved in training over the previous five days, Manning didn’t want to unnecessarily risk him and a full week at the High Performance Centre should put him in a better position to play against West Brom on Saturday.

“He was in my head, (for) his general play but also his set-piece delivery, he’s so dangerous that, as you saw for the goal, set-pieces are massive, at any level,” Manning said. “He was one that me and Hoggy (Chris Hogg, assistant) had spoken around. We knew we only had the one moment so it would have to be three changes and then obviously we scored and it changed what we needed. It allows us to then go, right, give him another solid week’s training which will help him.

“We need everybody all in with what we’re doing and, especially at the moment, we need as many available as possible. He was available but (it would have been) minimal minutes, to be totally honest. What we have now got is an opportunity, we’ll be in training on Monday, off Tuesday and then get another three days work in before West Brom.”

City remain without Kal Naismith (hamstring), George Tanner (MCL) and Matty James (achilles), with the latter seen arriving at Ashton Gate shortly after the team bus and walking into the stadium in slight discomfort.

James and Tanner have undergone injections for their respective injuries and will be assessed over the course of the week, with the head coach not willing to put a timeframe on their potential returns just yet.

“George had a little injection in his knee to speed up recovery,” Manning added. “It was slightly irritating him when he was running on the treadmill the other day, so I need to speak to the medical staff. I’m hoping he’ll be available at the weekend but I need to check with Procs (Andrew Proctor, interim head of medical).

“Jamo had an injection as well. Obviously, his previous with his achilles, his history behind that. Jamo could probably be a physio himself in terms of he knows his body better than anybody, he’s out of the boot, he’s progressing. The actual scans are showing his achilles looks really good so I’ll get in tomorrow (Monday) and find out where they’re at and what their weeks look like.”

Left-back Cam Pring continues to carry a small injury which isn’t preventing his availability but does seem to be impacting his performances slightly, with the 26-year-old struggling at times to defend Swansea winger Ronald, as had been the case five days earlier up against Ipswich Town’s Wes Burns. Manning insists Pring’s problem isn’t anything serious and can be properly treated at the end of the season.

“It’s manageable, it’s nothing to keep talking about, it’s just something that will be dealt with in the summer, it’s nothing major,” Manning said. “He’s had a heavy week and an extremely physical week.”

Signs of timidnes and indecision is a bit worrying at this time of the season but I'm convinced that given time LM will progress us, mid table finish is on the cards.

Using players when they are nursing a niggling injury may come back to bite you and so Liam did right to keep him on the bench.

Spot on, shouldn’t have even considered using him if he hasn’t recovered, not a good look.

Good decision not to use him i agree, bad decision to consider using him at all, luckily he wasn’t needed.

Did LM have Twine in the squad out of desperation and panic ?
I wonder if he was reacting to the fans mood music over recent games.
Thank goodness Dickie made sure LM didn't need to risk him.
Can you imagine the furore if Twine had come on and broke down.

I agree to a point but apparently it’s a minor niggle so better to bring him off than put him on then end up bringing him off after.. I thought Roberts did well when he came on but lacks the pace of Pring

Nah, I think he’s got it all under control.. I think he’s intelligent enough not to risk players unnecessarily

He certainly thought about it, sorry if the guy was injured he should not have been sat on the bench, high risk.

He’s come back from injury, not injured now, introducing him slowly has to be key

How can not bringing him on be considered bringing him back slowly?, surely if he didn’t come on he’s not been introduced at all?

That’s what my butler told me and I don’t argue with her <laugh>

LM 's plan .. it seems was to give him some game time to get a result probably around the 75 -80 minute mark if scores were level [ even losing? ] We played a defensive sort of tatty on the break game? so getting the goal we closed ranks more so didnt need attacking option?? so why risk putting a player under pressure when the game was "safe" ish ........ as stated an extra week of training would suffice and EASTER IS NOT FAR AWAY THIS YEAR ... actually starts in March!
