I KNOW that to be false due to privileged information I have. Year ago when lenders were a lot more relaxed you used to be able to get 'self cert' mortgages. In reality as long as you had a 15% or 20% deposit, lenders wouldn't ask any questions. They weren't at any risk as house prices were rising so quickly, they would always get their money back if the mortgagee defaulted. This was a loophole that hundreds of thousands, if not millions took advantage of - but to my knowledge TR was the only person ever prosecuted. When you took out a self cert mortgage you had to make certain declarations, but as long as you had the deposit, the lender wouldn't check. Bizarrely, that is how TR got prosecuted. He also took the fall for a family member who had done the same. It was a way for the police to put more pressure on Robinson, by going after his family.
