Cooper would be my choice. Will he work with Speakman? Unlikely imo As we have been told, team selection is a group discussion with the head coach having final say
You highlight the one potential positive from this current predicament. If they are serious about getting promoted they’ll realise their approach needs some adjustment and tweaks. It’s such an alarming drop in the past few months they have to learn some lessons. I don’t want to rip up and start again as there are some good elements to what they are doing. It just needs refinement and I’m hoping the fall towards the bottom will make it clear where we need to change. Starting with the fact that a head coach is still the leader and focal point of the club. It’s not just about coaching skills. They also need the autonomy and staff to perform at their best.
I think he deserves a crack at another premier league job and I thought he might be a good fit for Palace. That has gone now and I think now if we make a massive push he will fancy us.
Then we may have a problem. Team selection is on record as being a 'team' discussion with the head coach having the final say
Agreed mate, but as Speakman said, team selection is a group discussion, but the head coach has the final say
Too many cooks imo. If I was head coach I'd probably sit there and say, 'yes Kristaan, thanks for your input Kristaan' then when he leaves the room I'd pick whatever team I wanted to. Clearly I wouldn't last 2mins though.
Same here, I feel sorry for Beale, he vane here on his own, with established coaches picked by the dof and was meant to make a difference when the 'team' discussed the line up for the next game
That's what Speakman has created himself though. He's the one who's come out and said its a group discussion, he's the one who's has said they have an 'obsession with progression', he's the one who said Beales coaching was 'elite'. He shouldn't be surprised when the flak turns towards him. He will know the crack anyway, he has lists of head coach options, KLD will have a list of sporting directors as well.
I think without knowing exactly the dynamics of the team selection meetings, it's very easy to assume the worst. It could be that the intention, at least, was that members of the 'team' were allowed to put across any suggestions that they had before the head coach made the decision. It doesn't necessarily mean that Speakman dictated what he thought and then the Head Coach refined it. I really don't think that dynamic would have worked with Mowbray so there's no reason to believe that Beale was made to work that way.
Mate, speakman himself said it is a team discussion around the starting 11 and the head coach has the final say. How else can you interpret it?
Fair enough of this is the way it is, but I don't believe it's right that our DOF has such an influence
Well, in at least the two ways that I suggested and there could be many more permutations to what a team discussion constitutes. I think its fairly normal for these things to be discussed and we have to be a little bit careful not to be jumping at shadows.
Fair point and after a defeat orobly isn't the time for rational discussion on how it may work. That's aimed at me more than you btw
It may we be mate, but is there any footage of a Dan Ashworth saying he helped pick the Brighton team with Potter when he was there or footage of Jason Wicox saying he helps Russell Martin pick the Southampton team? Speakman is a bit too 'front and centre' for me.
That's where the issue probably lies. I do like how much we hear from him but not always what he actually says.
