Disappointing Flat racing tomorrow. Apart from one 3YO to 5YO race, over 5f, not one single race for 3yos, and handicaps only at Lingfield
DEMBE looks ready to go in. Really well handicapped on previous form and should have won on its penultimate race. A slow start and letting the front horses get away cost him the last race. Could make amends tomorrow. Hopefully.
I'd Like to Know popped up in my tracker for 2 miles (or up in trip). Runs over 2 miles today at Newbury 16.10. Has never encountered this ground before so maybe not a betting proposition now as short as 10/11. Demnat, who was fav last night has encountered the ground but hasn't won on it. Interestingly, the only one to have won on heavy is Fast Buck (twice) and he's 25/1 I think I'd Like to Know will be good enough regardless of the conditions today
There is an interesting Pertemps Final horse running in the 4:45 at Newbury today. Young Butler won the Newbury qualifier in November on seasonal and yard debut. Harry Derham has put him away since then and has entered him today after the weights have been published for the Pertemps Final. Maybe thinking he’ll need the penalty to get into the final? He runs off 127 today and should be worth a watch.
The last race at Newbury (16:45) a Class-3 Handicap Hurdle over an extended 3m on heavy ground, is certainly a competitive affair with many in with a good chance of winning. Not often do I pick the top weight on this going, but rider's allowance brings the impost down a bit. So, enough said, the choice is the Sinndar gelding, Hermino Aa, a staying type who will be suited by the prevailing conditions. Mr Freddie Mitchell (5) on board for the Gary Moore Stable. 4/1 best price, in just about all places, on the ATR site.
Well they could never lay a glove on Tanganyike and he absolutely dotted up. Didn't look good for Young Butler, either he went wrong on the final bend or the saddle strap snapped. Hope he is OK.
Didn't run lto due to heavy ground. Run him today with heavy ground, I think it has cost him his life Oddy. Didn't look good at all.
Been another tough week for jumps racing, from Volcano and then two in the same race at Bangor yesterday. Really very disturbing.
Young Butler hit me hard today. I've spent the last couple of weeks really deep-diving the Pertemps Final, looking at trends, reviewing all the qualifiers and looking very closely at the profiles of all those entered - and that does make you somehow get attached to the horses, especially the ones you think could be going places. Young Butler was one of the horses in the field that really interested me. He won his last start for Emma Lavelle last May and moved to Harry Derham in October. He won the Newbury qualifier in November after a protracted duel up the straight with Emitom (who was a very well handicapped horse on the day as he proved by defeating Kyntara back at Newbury a couple of weeks ago) and looked like a horse on an upward trajectory. I thought today's run was either a pipe-opener for the final or maybe even an attempt to win and get a penalty to ensure he got into the final (he was number 32 in the weights off 127 prior to today's race). Sadly we will never know now. RIP
