I stood next to him in Durham 30 years after he retired and believe me he still had a huge physical presence and looked just like he did when he first signed. A most extraordinary footballer and also a lovely person with no edge whatsoever.

I think it will only emerge from my pile of old SAFC stuff as I am being prepared for another world! However, if I manage to find it I will certainly post a copy on here.

Was there and got crushed and was carried out dazed.
Went direct to Roker Park after delivering the echos (for Miss Kay on Stockton Rd.) and queued for what seemed a lifetime to get in the Fulwell End.
Was so dazed and traumatised l can’t remember how but l ended up in the paddock next to the dug outs - even sat on top of them.
Never saw the last 20 mins or so.

Yes...I think that was the time when the gates were broken open by the weight of the supporters outside and thousands got in gratis.
Unofficially we were rumoured to have near to 70 000 there. It was the most full I've ever known it.

Crossan and Clough presented the Sports Day prizes at St Aidan's sometime in the mid/early 60's.
I managed to get their autographs and a quick word with each.

    Remember that one as well.
Nick Sharkey was a lad that stood ages signing autographs for us younguns - not all did but he signed with a smile as long as he was asked. Top bloke.

This match was always talked about by my uncles so it's etched in my brain.

Even though I was only eleven I had the privilege of being at all three games , at Manchester I was on an earlier train and was meeting up with adults to go to the game but their train was delayed and I panicked and found a bus to take me to the ground . After the game made my own way to the train and got a good telling off by the people I was supposed to be meeting . The replay at Roker was manic due to the crowds , my dad was having to lift me up to stop me being crushed and his trousers were around his knees when we eventually got in to the ground , I ended up over the barrier on straw that had been on the pitch . What a game same as at Old Trafford before the doom and gloom at Huddersfield in the second replay - what memories!!!
