Good Morning. It's Monday 26th February, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

    Late comeback stuns Foxes

Leeds came from behind late on, to blow the Championship race wide open with three goals in the last 14 minutes, leaving the Foxes shell-shocked at Elland Road on Friday evening.

Much was at stake for this top of the table clash, but from the start it was a surprisingly open game, with both sides deciding that attack was the best form of defence. For the majority, the visitors had the measure of Leeds in the final third, both offensively, and whilst defending.

Leicester clearly thought the hosts were vulnerable down their right hand side, with Archie Gray having to work overtime to try and tame their wingers. Joel Rodon time and time again got drawn out of position to bail out the makeshift right-back, causing problems of it's own.

Wout Faes had put the Foxes ahead on 15 minutes with a well rehearsed outswinging Dewsbury-Hall corner which got flicked on by Daka. For over an hour Enzo Maresca's side not only maintained their lead, but missed guilt edged opportunities to put them further ahead, including having a goal chalked off wrongly for offside.

Leeds unlikely leveller came on 80 minutes, moments after bringing Connor Roberts in on the action. The loose ball fell kindly for the 28yo after a strong run from Rutter; his first time shot finding the corner of the net. From this moment onwards, it was all Leeds!

Three minutes later, Leeds took the lead. Rutter, who had been quiet for much of the game, was again the antagonist. He rode several challenges from the edge of the area, before finding an outlet in the form of Archie Gray who was now operating a high line on the left flank.

His speculative left footed effort took a wicked defection off Faes, all but silencing the Leicester fans who had spent much of the game winding up the Elland Road faithful.

Just to rub salt into the wound, Leeds grabbed a third in stoppage time when Dan James' free kick took a slight nick off Bamford on its way in. It would have been Leeds first goal, direct from a free kick since Raphinha in October 2021.

    Post Match Comments

Daniel Farke was full of praise for his side at the post match press conference on Friday evening.

Whilst he acknowledged that Leeds were lucky not to have been 2-0 down due to Leicesters second half dominance, he retorted that his side had the better chances in the opening 45 minutes

"A great evening for everyone connected to Leeds United. There are many record-breaking statistics but the feeling is more important. You could feel how much it meant to everyone. I'm happy for our supporters to enjoy these moments with our fans.

"We created the better chances in the first half and I think they were a bit lucky to be in the lead at the break and then we were a bit lucky not to be 2-0 down after that because they had chances on the counter-attack.

"We fought our way back into it in the last 15-20 minutes. They were all goals of will and fighting spirit. It was a tight game but overall when I judge the full 90 minutes I think it was a deserved win."

Foxes Manager Enzo Maresca rued his sides missed opportunities, citing the disallowed goal as a major factor for the loss.

The 45yo bemoaned that they had dominated the game for 80 minutes, but vowelled to remain focused on the remaining 12 games between now, and the end of the season.

"It's a big shame but the way we performed was very good. For 80 minutes we controlled and dominated the game. We created many, many chances and football is about taking chances.

"It was so clear that there was only one team trying to win the game, dominate and create chances. Unfortunately, for the last 10 minutes the dynamic changed.
It could have been a totally different game - not only for that [disallowed] goal, but we had many more chances to score a second.

"I always said the race was very long. I never thought of winning the league by 10 or 15 points. At the end, the difference will be very tiny. We need to focus on the 12 games we have and try to win as many as we can."

Maresca's pre match comments angers Leeds fans

Angry Leeds fans took to social media prior to kick off after Enzo Maresca arrogantly insinuated that Friday's match was just another game for them, whilst was huge for Leeds.

Whether he was trying to deflect pressure from his players, or genuinely thought that way, it well and truly backfired. Perhaps if he had taken it more seriously, his side wouldn't have lost so badly!

He claimed “It’s a huge, huge, huge game for them. For us, it’s just one more game.”

Morning all. Don't see what all the fuss is about the Leicester coaches comments. Of course it was a huge game for us and they are still six points clear. Move on. I mentioned it already but at last the Elland Road cauldron seems to be affecting the opposition instead of us. Current squad are revelling in the atmosphere as it should be

    Morning all,

Well that was good wasn't it?

Hats off to Leicester, they were without a doubt the best team we've played this season. But the praise most definitely go to our boys for not giving up.
Farke needs praise as well for the changes he made with the subs. What a great night.

Thought it hilarious when Bamford went to celebrate his goal and no one went with him as they were all with Dan James the other side of the pitch.

no problem with his comments… though the post match ‘only one side wanting to win it’ was a ridiculous statement.

He’s not an easy man to like though

I seem to remember him making derogatory comments after we beat them earlier in the season.

    Morning all Leeds fans.

Bloody hell, have we all recovered yet? Lately I've been trying to cut down on drinking if I'm home on a Friday night but obviously that went out the window. Seems like Shako had one too many too!

Up until we scored I thought we were dreadful, didn't even deserve a point even though we somehow managed to carve out some good chances our finishing was awful. But just goes to show how important it is to keep going, despite the fact we could have been dead and buried, at only 1-0 down anything can happen. The Leicester players just caved in after we equalised. Not sure if their manager was trying to take the pressure off his players with his comments before the game but he certainly threw them under the bus with his comments afterwards!

    And thanks Millwall <cheers>

The Leicester coaches words stunk of arrogance to me. He's been around Guardiola too long

    Morning all.

Is Piroe actually the natural finisher that many think he is ?

Yes he's scored some good goals this season but he's missed the target plenty of times as well.

Certainly seems to be having a lean patch like all strikers do. Luckily we've got another striker that's on form. When both Piroe and Bamford lose the scoring touch then we'll have something to worry about.

There was a chance early on, some wonderful build up play but when it got to Piroe he seemed to try and blast it and it ended up being a terrible shot.

How many times have we seem him score where he guides the ball into the net with a softly weighted shot? That is what I thought was gonna happen then.

He is a natural scorer, he was well defended against on Friday, and this "lean" spell just happens to coincide with the return of lord Bamford.
He got put back in the side against Swansea and scored.

I think we had by far the better chances in the first half, we could have been 2-0 up on another night, we had far more possession, I don't agree that we were second best, we have done the double over Leicester and Ipswich, I don't understand anyone who doubts we are the best team in this division.

There's no doubt that if we'd taken the lead the match would have been different and we'd have been the ones looking to hit them on the break at speed. However that's not how it played out and we definitely rode our luck both with the Leicester misses and the disallowed goal that should have stood.

It was a cracking game though and the best this season by a mile.

didn't see the first half, second half they contained us easily and tore us apart on the counter

In our matches against the top 3, i think we were worthy winners at leicester and home to Ipswich, We rode our luck at home to Leicester and away at Ipswich. We were well beaten at Southampton.

On balance though there have been more games where we deserved points we didn't get than the other way round. Just my take.

    I'd agree we're the best side right now. But we didn't look it for much of the game on Friday. Chances created yes, chances badly missed, definitely. We just seemed to be very panicky when we got the ball (or maybe it was just me doing the panicking!) with a lot of rushed passes going astray. But in the end there's only one stat that I care about;

Leeds United 3 Leicester City 1

The 2 West Brom games definitely, blatent handball for their goal at ER, and totally dominated them. The penalty on Gnonto at their place, obviously we'd have had to had scored it but games we should have had 4 points not the 1

I think that the speed of the Leicester press caused the panic and mistakes. In midfield we tried the tippy tappy football we're good at, but rushed it so we didn't get caught in possession. One of their golden chances came from an attempted quick pass in the final third which was picked off by a Soton player who was only a few yards away from the one of ours who tried the pass - didn't look up before passing it. No, I can't recall who.

Interesting on our lack of goals from free kicks - 2 years+ is a chuffing drought. Is a dead ball specialist a role we need to fill? Corners - both the taking and heading in - have also been a weakness of ours for a few seasons now.

It's more Piroe never gets in the same sort of positions as Bamford
