I think this is spot on. Goalkeepers who are required to play as "sweeper-keepers" are often exposed to criticism from those with a more traditional goal keeping view. Bruce Grobelaar and David "Calamity" James were early examples of this system and were often criticised but they were undoubtedly excellent goalkeepers. Allsopp was roundly criticised by some on here a couple of weeks back for his collision with Greaves on the edge of the box - it's worth comparing that with the Liverpool keeper's performance in the game against Arsenal the next day. Alisson is often described as one of the best goalkeepers in the world but his un-Allsopp like hesitation in an almost identical situation cost Liverpool a goal (as did his unsuccessful attempt to play the ball out of defence in the same game)

We should respect these comments as they are from the best goalkeeper I even had the pleasure to played with.

That's very kind John. I must say that I place myself firmly in the "old school" of goalkeeping and I do spend a fair amount of time with my heart in my mouth when watching City play it out from the back but I also recognise that it has tactical benefits whilst requiring a rather different skill set for the keeper.

Yes agreed but it also can and has lead to giving silly goals away, and as we are not potent at scoring goals is it worth the risk if we give the ball away on the edge of our penalty area.

That's obviously the calculation that LR made a while ago now and concluded that yes it is worth it.

Question was posed earlier about this. Yes the risk of giving goals away exists but exactly how many has it cost us? No-one could of think of one.

The point I was making earlier is that the goalkeeper has the best view of the whole pitch and at times he has to make the decision of what to do.

Think we need to start accepting the perception of risk amongst some is proving to be higher than the actual risk evidently is.

Which is why it's a little strange some are still focussing so much on it.

I thought this was a reply to my post and couldn’t recall John playing for Brough primary school.

When we signed Sharp I never expected him to start games but to play from the bench for last 15/20mins of games if needed and may possibly be offered a coaching role for our strikers at the end of the season which I think he could be successful at.
