Tories set the tax rates to keep large sums of money intact while the rest of us get battered Two thirds of the £400k was a one-off capital gain from his donkey field, which I personally would have taxed at the same rate as everything else
Tbf, if they were really helping their mates they wouldn’t have kept IHT frozen since they’ve been in power. With inflation it should be approx 500k now, it’s still set at 325k with a 40% tax on anything above that.
Dropping like flies ... Tories may face Blackpool byelection as Scott Benton loses suspension appeal MP for Blackpool South, who offered to lobby for gambling industry, loses appeal against 35-day Commons suspension. If the Commons backs the punishment, it could leave Benton – who was stripped of the Conservative whip after the allegations surfaced – facing a byelection. A party spokesperson called on Benton to resign immediately rather than wait for the outcome of any recall petition. Rowena Mason Whitehall editor Tue 20th Feb 2024 11.32 GMT
Never ending Great article at the weekend by Peter Hitchens, it was about the state of the two main parties. The comparison he made between the two was quite worrying.
The article was about the parties rather than the leaders, although he didn't rate either leader as capable leaders. The conclusion l took from it, was, we are in for more of the same whoever win the next election. He was not impressed by either party, with some scathing comments about both.
Parliament didn’t cover itself in glory just now. Looks like the Speaker will have to go. Total embarrassment.
I would be surprised if he is still in post tomorrow morning. Quite the decision he made, and the vote that went ahead was a farce. I dont buy into the accusations flying around, he seems a very decent man indeed, but politics is brutal to all it seems
I know Lindsay Hoyle and he is a man if integrity. I haven't spoken to him tonight but from what I know of the man he would have done what he has done with the best of intentions. He's no Bercow, he doesn't court controversy. The sad thing is it's performative politics, nothing said tonight in Westminster will change a thing in Gaza. Bollox.
Hope he is ok mate. I like the man from afar and believe what he says. Bit of an odd decision though all in all. His good intentions havent seemed to be executed well imo. Last thing I want for a man like him is an ongoing campaign. Morduant said it well enough, move on promptly I hope. If he is up to the scutiny hope be stays on, but if he steps down I dont blame him. This country is awful towards its politicians.
He needs to go. Showed his bias towards his ‘old’ party today. Unacceptable for the position he is in.
This could be a massive boost for the tories. Starmer has shot himself in the foot big time. Penny Mordaunt currently ripping Labour a new one.
