2005-06 season. 33 matches. They lost match 1 and then not again until match 35. Their only two league defeats all season.
Ah yes I did have it the wrong way round then. Makes sense seeing as that was the record points total season. Must have done a pretty long one in 11/12 too though. Gonna look it up
And whilst it's not the football league record, it is I believe the second-tier record. I think it's the 4th best football league record, and the seventh best football league or premier league record.
It shows how amazing that 106 points record is, that our current PPG would still see us finish nowhere near it. We would need to win 15 of our remaining 17 games to equal it (or 14 wins and 3 draws). Leicester are still just on course to beat it, but they would only need to fall away slightly to miss it. (And what both of those sentences highlight is just how unlikely it is that we might overtake Leicester.)
I've said most of the season that Leicester not hitting record points would be a failure imo given the quality they have. The gap is certainly far bigger than back in 2006.
This has been a surprising season, that foe me started better than expected with 10/12 pts when I was expecting a losing mentality start. Then revert to type, four poor defeats, oh that is the Saints we expected and another poor manager appointed. Then the slow build of a team bonding and growing. A manager sticking to his principles, with slight adjustments getting his messages across. The small snow ball gathering momentum and growing through the autumn and now causing an avalanche of destruction on anyone in its way in the cold winter. I know most think Leicester cannot be caught, I am not so sure, this is now the most consistent team I have seen in my life time, more consistent than the team of 84 ( not as good, nowhere near, but more consistent), stronger than the team of 2011 (star dependent). This team has no stars, just a well oiled machine driving forwards. Really don't think promotion is in doubt, just can we take the title
So yesterday ticks yet another one off. Extends our all time record of unbeaten in all comps to 25. Extends our league unbeaten record to 22. Two matches short of the record of 24 set in the 19th century.
Just reading the numbers is unbelievable. TWENTY FIVE games on the trot without losing. This is Southampton. WOW, just WOW.
We were pretty much unbeatable at the Dell during the Lawrie Mac era but this is the most dominant we have been at home since we moved to SMS for sure.
I've got to applaud Loading's commitment to the cause - never misses a training session, plays on through any niggles, and always gives 100%. The phrase "It's a marathon, not a sprint" has never been more true in Loading's case, and he's certainly stepped up to the plate with this. It's time a plaque was erected on the side of St Mary's, to honour his dedication. Until we lose, of course, then it'll all be his fault....
