As has been mentioned, he was a great player in what, to us, seemed a great team. These were my early days as a passholder, and I was hooked for life. Took a trip to his pub on the way to Hatlepool in the 90s. Sat and had a chat with him, drinks and photos. Great guy on and off the pitch. Match was **** mind. Lost 2-4.
Sir Les was not only a fabulous footballer, but also an absolute gentleman, he always reminded me of Frank Worthington with his skill set and certainly knew were the net was,I recall him playing against us when we played Blythe in the cup and he ended up.signing for us after that, thank gawd he did, great player great man
In 1982 a precautionary x-ray at work turned up with several acorn sized shadows in my lung and these were further confirmed by x-ray tomography. I was very fit at the time and felt fine so, rather than risk immediate surgery, my consultant thought it wiser to keep a very close eye on things. A repeat tomography was planned a month later and the day before it I went with a Middlesbrough supporting colleague of mine to watch City against Halifax. City won and Les Mutrie had a great game. Next day I had my follow up and the x-rays showed some slight reduction in the size of the apparent tumours - within 6 months they were gone. My pal (who was a pathologist and really feared the worse for me) was amazed and we've always referred to it as the miracle of Saint Mutrie of Boothferry Park.
What a goal that was - unforgettable! Mutrie got the ball wide on the left, cut inside, dribbled through 3 or 4 of the Blunts defenders and slotted the ball into the bottom corner - cue absolute Mayhem on Bunkers!
