Watched 'The End We Start From' at Beverley Parkway. Saw the film had 5 stars in a review (think it was i newpaper). Good film and a lovely independent local cinema that deserves supporting.
I'm enjoying boy swallows universe. Good cast and some great acting. Especially the kids. Lots of twists and turns and takes you through the emotions. It's a must watch imo.
Just started watching Slow Horses. Read all the books but never really got it somehow. Tv series is really good though.
He’s pretty much excellent in everything. I watched him, Tom Hardy and Paddy Considine in Child 44 last week. Losely based on the true story of a child serial killer in Russia, it’s fairly grim, but very well made.
Just struggled through Saltburn. If you haven't seen it yet you've done yourself a favour. Never have I seen such a pointless, self-indulgement, unpleasant pile of tripe. Beautifully filmed, well acted but ultimately it says nothing we haven't seen/heard before in better packages. Avoid.
In stark contrast, I saw The Holdovers at the cinema over the weekend and would recommend it heartily - funny, moving, maintains pace and interest, Paul Giamatti is superb.
One of the best actors around in my humble opinion Paul Giamatti is, I could literally sit listening him read the phone book, for anyone born after 2000 it’s how we found each other if we didn’t have their phone number and knew their address. “ let your fingers do the talking “
Yes, I was pondering that over the weekend but watched Slow Horses on telly instead. Might now reconsider!
Wanted to see a few of the nominated and talked about films so watched some over the last few days; Saw The Holdovers at local artsy cinema after a lovely curry and enjoyed both enormously. I fancy another curry and could easily be persuaded to watch the film again already. Will keep an eye out for it on streaming platforms. Killers of the Flower Moon on Apple TV was barely Ok but I could hardly keep my eyes open near the end. How it got a nomination for editing I'll never know as it was too long and self indulgent. Couldn't worked out why Di Caprio was acting like he thought he was Brando in Godfather with something shoved in his jaw. Story came across as a bit thin despite the source material being shocking. Suspect there was a much better film in there that Scorcese tried to get out but failed. Maestro on Netflix is about Leonard Bernstein and I probably know more about him than I ever wanted to. Expected the music to be better and there to be more "story". Carey Mulligan very good, playing his long suffering wife. Suffering being the operative word in the end. The makeup and prosthetics were stunningly good. Couldn't really recommend the film though. I enjoyed Saltburn. Only watched it to see what the fuss was about, and thought it was quite funny. Definite parallel to Brideshead and a very knowing Gen Y/millennial writing/directing approach from Emerald Fennell which was a bit much at times but she got away with it. A couple of excellent performances were overlooked for awards. Looking out for other new films if anyone has any recommendations.
It's a game of opinions... The Holdovers is ok, a little contrived and the humour falls a little flat at times. Dominic Sessa is going to be a star though and if ever there's an Andy Murray biopic, he's your man. Killers of the Flower Moon is a complete tour de force. Best film of 2023 and certainly not overlong. DiCaprio was good, De Nero was better and if Lily Gladstone doesn't win an Oscar it'll be because Emma Stone was even more brilliant in Poor Things. Scorcese is a genius. The ending was a little bizarre though, I grant you. Saltburn? Haven't seen it but I know that I won't like it. Recommendations? If you haven't seen it, see Poor Things.
Agree about opinions. Killers oTFM got so much praise I had high expectations, which were just not met. Wanted to love it but couldn't. RdN was indeed as good as ever.
I'm looking forward to The Iron Claw when it's released for streaming. Not necessarily a wrestling fan, but a bit of a soft spot for the 80's version I grew up watching.
A line from the first book, something like this, Jackson Lamb, looked like Timothy Spall, but with better teeth. Often wonder if Mr Spall ever considered chucking his hat (teeth?) into the ring for the lead part.
Agree with most of that Ernie. Poor Things was excellent as was Flowers. Despite being skeptical I thought Saltburn was a good watch.
