Needed that. Could be a defining moment of the season. By the time we play again, Philogene will be back in the side along with anyone else we've managed to bring into the team. By tomorrow night we may not be in the top 6 anymore, but with that result we remain firmly in the mix, despite the injury list at the moment and some of the appalling ref decisions that have cost us points recently.

A loss tonight could have seen us outside the top 12 by the next time we play, so definitely a huge one.

I think steverico means our individual quality is still good enough even with all the players out. I agree. Our squad is underrated.

We played the last part of the game perfectly, but if we’re honest, we were very lucky!

Disciplined defensive performance from a makeshift team, that'll do nicely. Mixed bag of performances, Morton was unusually poor to begin with although he did improve and Slater was barely in it when we had the ball, but after a shaky start they did protect the defence better as the game went on. Lokilo is getting a lot of stick which I can understand to an extent, when we had the ball he looked like what he is, a limited player very low on confidence. However when they had possession you could see why Rosenior picked him, he was generally in a good position to support Jacobs and was far more disciplined about his defensive duties than I think Allahyar would have been. Docherty dochertied with plenty of energy while also demonstrating why he isn't a first choice for a top 6 club. Coyle was fantastic, except when he got in their penalty area which was the only time I would have preferred Christie to have those opportunities. Jacobs quietly good, Carvalho good in their half, pretty poor in ours, lost possession too many times in dangerous areas. All in all though, very nice, ground out a win and kicked the opposition more than they kicked us which makes a nice change.

We've just took 2 months off and are still in the top 6! Get a couple signings over the line and I fancy us to be there come May

I disagree. We played with no recognised striker, Docherty and Slater in the heart of midfield, a kid in his second league start at LB, and with an incredibly thin bench. If we'd 'gone for it' we'd have been ripped to shreds.

    schoolboy error here from baz:

The Tigers, with successive league defeats coming into the game, secured one of their most important wins of the season so far and sends them into their winter break with a real confidence boost.

what is it that sends them into their winter break, baz? that verb needs a subject.

    Massive result & deserved.

Sunderland, their support, ground & team are soulless.

Has Clarke escaped from Coyle’s pocket yet?

Must admit with all the missing I didn’t expect that, great defensive performance, we all know how much Clarke loves to go inside and get a shot away, well I can’t remember him doing it. We didn’t create much but got the vital goal and as a team defended very well. Really needed excellent 3 points.

He’s churning out reams of copy within minutes of the game finishing as well as doing all the other stuff a modern-day local sports journo has to do such as video upsums, tweets etc. Must be a logistical nightmare, and he probably no longer has sub-editors to check things. Sub ‘that’ for ‘and’ and it works - which is probably what he meant to write.

Sunderland head coach Michael Beale told BBC Radio Newcastle:

"We were the more dominant team, but we lacked a cutting edge in the final third for all our possession.

"The more attempts we had, we should do better but that's on me as coach to find solutions for that.

"I get the fans' frustrations but they can see the effort on the park from the players.

"But any little help they can give the players would be a help. They have to understand the strength of help they can give to the team."

Hull City head coach Liam Rosenior told BBC Radio Humberside:

"This feels great. We've been up against it the last few weeks, it's the first time we've felt things going a little bit against us.

"So to put in such a committed performance, full of belief, hard work and endeavour, I couldn't be prouder of the players tonight.

"But we've got to keep that going for the rest of the season."
