Well done Russell and the lads. To equal an 102 year old record by going 20 (19 league) games unbeaten is an incredible achievement and such a welcome tonic after the utter dross of the last few years. I was someone who spent the last 2-3 seasons arguing that being relegated would bring a more enjoyable season but even in my wildest dreams I wouldn't have anticipated such a long run without losing and including NINE straight home wins. We've scored 4+ goals in a third of those games too. Let it sink in that no Saints team in the football league era has ever had a longer unbeaten run than this team. Delighted for Russell who's taken a fair bit of criticism (including from myself) at points this season but you can't deny the results we've got since our shocking September. I'm sure some will say it means nothing if we don't get promoted but I'm calling bollocks on that. Even if this run stops next week it'll stand for a long long time and his name will always be associated with that. When did you last enjoy a period of a season like we have this one? Absolutely ****ing brilliant.
So now the football league era record has been matched we can turn our attention towards our all time record which is 24 league matches set across two seasons between 1896 and 1897 (and we actually went unbeaten in 1896/7): Our next five matches are: Swansea (A) Rotherham (A) Huddersfield (H) Bristol City (A) WBA (A) Be tough to get that I reckon with four away games
And this run has seen us go from 15th to 2nd and turn a -7 goal difference into a +19 GD. truly brilliant to be watching and supporting Saints at the moment
Today was a masterclass in possession football and very entertaining to watch, surely nobody can say that it is boring now. The clean sheets are very encouraging too.
The remarkable thing about this run is that we've behind in just 2 of those games: Preston and Coventry.
In those 20 games, we have only been behind at any stage in two of them I think too. Coventry and Preston. At some point in each game we were level in all 20
Amazing, simply amazing turnaround. So, so, so happy to be wrong about my initial doubts about Martin. He is an exceptional manager, we were unbelievable today. Well drilled, dangerous, composed, solid. ****ing brilliant
I just checked the Not606 history books too. You were the last poster to have a losing match day thread!
Funny thing that Preston game. At the time that late Baz equaliser seemed like a great moment for him more so than us a whole. Quite mad now to think that it played such a huge part in this run so early on. The unbeaten run could have been a pathetic four games Genuinely might have helped turn our season around that.
Oops edited to equaliser. Funny that I typed winner as I definitely had equaliser in my head. Obviously so used to winning As for it not being Baz's goal I ain't having that despite what some dubious goals numpties say. In the same way nobody will ever tell me that Dodd didn't score from a corner against Pompey.
