As per the excellent thread title me and Mrs Smug are having a music night tonight.

We often replay a Glen Campbell classic, 'Gentle on my Mind' where he's given the briefest intro and launches into a very quick version.
His guitar playing is incredible and the words of the song miles ahead of nonsense like Bohemian Rhapsody and other songs that are often claimed as the best ever.

We've recently started playing a cover by Billy Bragg and Joe Henry that's surprisingly good. Loads have covered the song but few have made a decent crack and no one has done it as good ...

... this is a pretty fkn good milkshake, I don't know if it's worth five dollars but it's pretty fkn good.

Showing my age but BBC4 is showing Top of the Pops from 1980! The likes of Madness, Pretenders, Adam and the Ants, Dexys, The Piranhas and others playing <cheers>

Brilliant that Smug, a real bit of Americana. The bloke on the intro is Chet Atkins, arguably one of the best guitarists around.

What astounds me is the incredible respect of 'the audience' who just happen to be huge stars in their own right.

I never listened to any of them growing up, not cool enough ...

... what a joy it is to be 'discovering them' now.

    Couldn't agree more, mate!

An immaculate band. There are two bands I can name that have huge catalogues but have never produced a bad song...The Smiths and Pixies. Both have two key things in common, visionary guitarists and genius front men/lyricists! Think what you will of him, but, Morrissey wrote some of the greatest lyrics of all time.

To me they're the group equivalent of Bob Dylan.

I can understand people not liking them or their style ...

... but I fail to see how they can deny their genius and originality.

It's crazy how the likes of Robbie Williams are put up as national treasures when incredible people like John Cooper Clarke and Morrissey are barely acknowledged by the X-Factor generation. Absolute no-hoper shelf stacking chancers are voted through because their Gran just died and given standing ovations by an audience who rarely leave the house.
