Obviously you were always going to disagree with what I had said but we certainly were looking very hard. We also had the help of an excellent local tour guide who took us to a number of good bars and restaurants but almost none of which served food after about 8pm. Some great bars in the old town and around the student quarter but nothing there stayed open late. One night we did eventually find an Indian restaurant that was still open at midnight but that was about it. This was May last year. Hopefully things would pick up in June, July, August, etc. We loved the place but wouldn't particularly suggest it for late night eating or drinking. I suspect the 'over 3,400 bars' thing may be something of an exaggeration too.

Did you read the article? Are you saying all the information by the writer is incorrect? It would not be a major tourist attraction year round if the hours were similar to Hull’s. You can look up the amount of bars in articles about Bilbao. Presumably hat is for the urban/metropolitan area.

I'll be really disappointed if they don't have a statue at the airport in his honour at the Bilbao Bagging area.

Did I read the article? No - only the bits I could read without signing up to something I didn't particularly want. I have however visited and experienced the place for a week. We talked to several locals, we toured the place quite extensively both independently and with the help of an excellent local guide. But why would I value someone else's opinion (someone who I don't even know) or even a tourist brochure over my personal experience? I have been there. Thoroughly enjoyed it - but it is a fact that if you want to eat or drink late at night you'd be much better off in Hull (or even Norwich!) That was certainly the case in May 2023 anyway. There were a good number of bars and restaurants open at 6 and 7pm (and one did stay open until midnight on the Saturday night) but for other nights restaurants closed early and most bars were closed before 11pm.

The article gives links to websites for bars and restaurants which show opening times. It was by a reporter ho had been there and was not a tourist brochure. The majority open until far later than here. Some restaurants do not open until 9 and 10 pm and serve until the early hours. Even in small places bars are open until 2 and 3 let alone in a city the size of Bilbao.

As I said we were actually there for real. There is quite a drinking culture around 5pm to 7pm (locals drinking after work) but there is absolutely nothing open on a week night after midnight. This was the case in May 2023 antway. Yes, there were plenty of bars and restaurants but they all tended to close early. We asked various local people (tour guides and staff at out hotel) if they knew of anywhere but only a lone Indian restaurant opened late during the week. There was a suggestion that tourism was very slow to return after the pandemic and there was hope that things would pick up in June or July. It may be different now but the city was a ghost town at midnight in May 2023.

Historically, there's been a tradition of eating later and eating with kids etc around the Med, but I think it's less true now than it used to be. Where I stay in the Algarve (which to be fair is a small market town), there's absolutely nothing open after 10.00pm.

Spain does not do early closing. As can be seen by the websites for places in that article. The only explanation is the end of covid. The suggestion that Hull (or Norwich<laugh>);has a nightlife better and later than Spain’s 5th largest city is risible really.

How on earth do you know just by actually going there.
You should have googled it instead.

Isn't this a bit like comparing Brighton with Grimsby?

Not sure what the issue is. He prefers a night out in Hull to Bilbao. Just an opinion from his experience. Not everyone has some weird fetish about going out drinking and eating tapas with a baby at 4am.

To be fair Castro the article you posted is from 2019. You’ve said it yourself in this post, but Covid has absolutely torn apart the hospitality industry in many countries so what was true and accurate reporting pre-Covid could be totally different now.

If you use TripAdvisor as I do when you’re exploring a foreign city you can’t help but notice that many venues it recommends have just disappeared. And many of the ones that are still there have significantly reduced their opening hours.

I haven’t been to Spain since the pandemic, but this was definitely noticeable in both Paris and Rome.

You think in Spain's 5th largest city everything is shut down before it is in Hull? It does have tourists but is a large city with a lot of industry and commerce.

    Agree about Rome
I’ve been to Barcelona, Istanbul and Amsterdam post pandemic too and whilst there were some places open late there were plenty closing well before midnight.
Similar downturn in ski resorts too.
