Ipswich away was pretty tasty too...5-2 I think, Adam and SRL played on another level that night. Love us to do the same to them this season. Found it
Yep. One of my favourite ever away games. Totally wasn't planning to go but a very good friend surprised me with both tickets and a lift up there. Great away day
That was early ish in the season iirc but was the game when we all thought '**** we could actually be contenders here'
Real class in that team, such deft touches and movement, well nothing more I can say. Brilliant. But something is developing with our present crop, it's coming and i can't remember the time I've seen us score 4goals x3 at home. No doubt better students than I will correct if so.
Yeah went that game, living in Essex at the time & it was the performance that made me think, wow could I dream!?
“I wish I could say Sekou fought the good fight and the defenders let him score, but championship football is no fairy-tale world”.
I was thinking about this the other day, I know the 11-12 has the benefit and in some cases the detriment of hindsight, but I would definitely have more from that team than the current crop as things stand. We won a lot more games by a more impressive nature, but it’s also true that most of those wins came at the start of the campaign and the last few months were packed with tension, whilst this team has had to live with expectation from the off.
I really don't think there's that much in it all. The 2011-12 squad had the huge advantage of having a natural goal scorer and target man rolled into one in Lambert. Plus the creativity of Lallana and the excellence of Schneiderlin. If I was to combine the two squads to make a starting XI I would probably go: Baz KWP Fonte THB Fox (LB clearly the weak link in both squads!) Morgan Downes Stu Lallana Lambert Adarma Manager: Martin So actually, more players from this years squad are in (6-5), with Martin just getting my vote as manager over Adkins.
But… Lambert and Lallana were streets ahead of our current team. Lambert is a genuine club legend and Lallana would have been had he not left like he did.
Think Martin is a good manager, but I loved Adkins. No way would Russ tell us he was having an afternoon of romance
Very good point and I'd add schneiderlin to that list too. All 3 went on to play for huge clubs and most saints fans could see they would play at the very top one day, although perhaps we didnt expect it with Lambert due to age. Out of our current team, the only one I think will end up at champions league level is Harwood-Bellis.
Thought about him as you can see he has talent and is at a good level despite such a huge move at a young age. But he hasnt really shown enough to justify starting for us let alone think about getting to that level. The other one I mulled over was Baz. If he manages to remove the silly mistakes as he gains experience, with his passing ability, I think a lot of big clubs would take a look.
We're early doors into the renaissance with many youngsters developing, some will move onwards and upwards only time will tell which of them will move on to the top level.
Those Ipswich highlights are pretty clear. Lambert and Lallana look imperious in them. Both doing things our players don’t. Charly has potential - but from a young age Lallana made us tick.
I don't really get the Lallana hate, especially after so long. He could have left for the prem when we were in league 1 but chose to stay. After helping us get back to back promotions he left for one of the biggest clubs in the world. Don't really see whats wrong with that.
