Might not help depending on where you live, but at the other end of the scale to online giant Tablets2U.com type stuff (hope that’s not a real one, it wasn’t meant to be!) we use the little chemists in Swanland. Prescriptions go electronically to them, then we pay £40 a year for both of us to have them delivered and a bloke (usually the same bloke) comes round in a van and drops them off. Nothing life saving so not really noticed if it’s the right day exactly but Mrs Tash’s are very regular deliveries and it works for us. Missed him once so rang and he dropped it in on his way home. Thinking of getting my bread delivered by a small boy in a flat cap on a heavy bicycle too.
the guy certainly enjoyed his night out in Hull Hull - Old Town Area We were on a 'Highway To Hull' (I won't ever tire of making that joke, sorry haha) for the first Saturday of 2024 and on youtube.com/@TheGreatBritishPubCrawl Direct Video Link --> https://youtu.be/gQPkUiNT3QE So... before we start... let me just get something off my chest... I owe the people of Hull an apology... I have been to Hull numerous times over the years for both football and wrestling purposes and if someone was to ask me the question... 'What's Hull like?' I would always describe it in a less than favourable way... (the words 'a dump' may have come up more than once...) Well, all I had really ever seen of the place was boarded up shops, run down estates and graffiti everywhere... I had never really ventured out beyond whatever venue that we had headed to for a wrestling show or beyond the football stadium and I'm going to admit that I was wrong... I'm big enough to admit it when I get something wrong and can honestly say now, that having been down into the Old Town, I think the place is absolutely banging! People of Hull... I apologise... you have a lovely town... and I already want to come back... Here is how our day unfolded... After a small delay with our room key not working at the hotel, we hopped in a cab (not an Uber as Hull doesn't seem to have Uber yet... so weird... haha) and made it down to the 'Old Town' where our first stop was 'The Empress' - a grand looking old pub a historic feel to it... we arrived at 16:20 and the place already had door staff on, dimmed lights and disco music playing... so it looks like Hull is an early party starter... so we'd best get our drink on! Haha Staff were friendly and the vibe of the pub was good... no hand pulls on and the tap selection airs more towards your Carling/Fosters/John Smiths type offerings. We then took a 3 minute wander down the river and slightly deeper into the old town... where we went in search of food and an opportunity for me to continue the hunt for the UKs Best Burger... Settling on 'Bar 82' as the preferred choice, where we also found this one already buzzing and vibrant by 16:30... the staff are lovely and this is a cocktail bar plus more with a great little menu that includes Tapas style dishes and wood fired pizzas as well as plenty of further options. A great selection on the taps that include a couple of the 'Brixton' range and of course... I ordered the Burger which in here is called an '82 Burger' and has cheese, smoked bacon, caramelised red onion and brioche bun... which was excellent! Just next door is 'Furley & Co.' which is a very dog friendly, craft beer, Cafè style bar with great selection on the taps and plenty of hand pull options. A vibrant and bustling place without a single seat to park ourselves on, even at 530pm...this is a proper drinkers place with really good atmosphere and friendly welcome... there is a proper doggy cafe on the first floor and they offer a lot of special stuff for your four legged pal including pupshakes and doggy meals... a top establishment! About 100 yards up the road is 'Quayside' which shocked us a little by how quiet it was, in fact, as I sit here writing this, we are the only customers in here at 17:45... and everywhere else we've been so far is packed... It could be down to the fact that it is absolutely freezing inside with no heat to be found anywhere... or it could be the music choice, which is some sort of 90s/2000s RnB style stuff... that doesn't really seem to be in keeping with the other places around this area that we've seen so far... a strange one that could definitely do with some energy injecting into it... Maybe it's a late starter and we are just here too early... A quick Google search bought up that this was formerly a bistro/bar named Leonardos that closed its doors in July 2023, so assumingly, 'Quayside' is pretty new... it definitely needs to get some identity... and fast... Down a beautiful cobbled street and to 'The Mission' for stop 5... a pub housed in a former church! This one is all kinds of grand with some stunning stained glass windows still intact and a unique and quirky layout. They've got pool tables, plenty of space and a couple of hand pull options on the bar. Again, dead quiet by the time of our visit but this one is so big inside that it would look half empty even with 200 people inside. A lovely, historic place! Just a little further along the cobbled street and in the shadow of the amazing Hull Minster is 'The Kingston' which is a nice little street corner pub that feels like a good old fashioned proper boozer... with four hand pulls on, some decent lagers on the taps, that include the king of lagers... 'Estrella' and a decent bit of a party vibe going on. There are some TVs for the sport, a friendly atmosphere and very welcoming staff... and you can't beat the view of the Minster from the windows!! A lovely little pub! Right next door is the 'Star Of The West' which is another gorgeous, old pub! A lovely old stone floor and plenty of original looking wood all over the small bar area. This one was really bringing the old school party tunes with some classic 80s rock getting the shapes flowing! A historic little pub for sure... there are a couple of hand pulls on the bar but neither appeared to have anything on them. Decent enough tap selection though! Definitely an older crowd in here but they create a great atmosphere! Down this street, you will find four pubs in a row, each next door to each other... and its a great little street! The next one along is 'The Bonny Boat' which was PACKED... standing room only... and to be honest, there wasn't even much of that! 60s music playing and again an older crowd who were just vibing away and loving life... the atmosphere in here again is absolutely spot on... The 4th in the row is 'Crown & Cushion' which brings a bit more of a subdued vibe and the ability to grab a seat at a table haha... a more rustic vibe going on in here but the music is still proper old school stuff and is totally in keeping with the pubs on this street... smartly presented with a really good lager selection on the taps, you could say this one feels like a modern twist on an old school pub classic... top atmosphere... friendly pub... We then headed along to the end of that street, bypassing 'Yates's' (even though I love a bit of nostalgia) and were heading for the 'George Hotel' before we were accosted in the street (see the YouTube video haha) with the offer of free shots so we headed into 'The Blossom Tree' which is a lovely, buzzing little cocktails and karaoke bar where I treated the people of Hull to my dulcet tones and a rendition of Brown Eyed Girl... it's a nice little cocktail bar... and who doesn't love a bit of karaoke on a Saturday night? We then did make it down to 'The George Hotel' which is now under the control of Craft Union... but it certainly isn't your every day, run of the mill Craft Union place... this 500 year old, former coaching inn and hotel is a real stunner and is split across two floors with a sports bar type room upstairs... downstairs is a much more historic and subdued affair, with several hand pull options and the classic Craft Union cheap drinks deals... including 3 x WKDs for £6 haha... Landlord is a top guy and gave us a bit of great history, even showing us 'England's Smallest Window' that is a feature of the pub... (see last nights live video and posts) We loved it in here... top place, top people, great story... We then headed 2 minutes up the road to take in 'Ye Olde White Hart' which is one we had heard a lot about already... and boy... does this one deliver... this STUNNING old place has stood since 1550AD and is just breathtaking in every way! Also steeped in history as on St George's Day 1642 within the establishment a decision was reached within its 'Plotting Parlour' that would lead to the commencement of The Civil War and eventually result in the death of King Charles... You can feel the history in these walls from the moment you walk in and one look to the left of the entrance will show you a seating area that is every bit, the original position of the bar, or I will eat my hat! Untouched and displayed in all its former glory, this one is up there with any of York, London or Edinburgh's old pubs and NEEDS to be visited... couple the history with the fact that they've got a line up of 6 hand pulls and plenty to choose from on the taps and you'll struggle to find a more complete pub that suits all tastes... 10/10... A 2 minute walk will take you past some other beautiful pubs... but our mission was to get to 'Ye Olde Black Boy' next, which quotes on the outside that it is Hull's Oldest Pub... established in 1729... (so maybe there is some dispute over when licences were issued and Ye Olde White Harte became an actual 'pub') either way... this is another absolute gem... split into two separate bars, the front of which was the old 'smoking room' ,this one also has all of the classic original features, from beautiful stained glass windows to oak floors and a really welcoming way about it. Friendly door staff, great staff inside and another sterling beauty of a boozer... Just further down the same cobbled street is 'The Sailmakers Arms' which is another absolute belter... Old and beautiful but quirky and unique in equal parts with watches and time pieces hanging from all over the ceiling, a super doorman who is engaging and entertaining and some brilliant staff behind the bar! You've got a feast of hand pulls on the bar to choose from but an equally banging selection on the taps... this is a true banger and another top notch establishment in the old town! We then rushed ourselves up to 'The White Hart' (yeah I know, 2 'White Hart' type names in a close vicinity... but hear me out) This one is a true craft beer house and right up my street in every way! Not only is the young lady on the bar, a lovely and welcoming host, but the offering of the hand pulls, the taps and indeed the cans is top notch... I went for half a Blueberry and Mango Sour called 'Tangled In Blue' from Salt brewing... which was impeccable!! Another fantastically historic building, that's clean, vibrant and appealing and a REAL drinkers pub!! Getting to the 'we go to whatever is still serving' stage of the evening now and our next stop was 'The City Hotel' which is a mightily grand looking old hotel building... friendly door staff and a lovely looking interior... This was a strange one as the music screams 'rock pub' to me... but the clientele doesn't suit the goth/rock vibe... at least it didn't at just gone 11pm at the time of our visit... we liked it a lot and very much enjoyed the rockier style of the music... there are a couple of hand pulls on the bar and a good selection on the taps that included Peroni which we hadn't seen throughout the evening in Hull until now... Just across the way is one of Hull's Wetherspoon's establishments....known today as 'The Three John Scotts' A former post office building, this one takes its name from the fact that the church directly opposite (known as St Mary's Church) was run by three successive Vicars... all named 'John Scott' between the years of 1816 to 1883... Honestly, I'm not making this up as I go... please log in to view this image As the night wore on... we headed down to 'Dirty Dicks' which... for the British History buffs amongst you, will know that was the nickname of Dick Turpin... now, I'm actually a big fan of the Dick Turpin story and have managed a couple of pubs over the years that the man himself was known to frequent... However... this, was probably not one of them please log in to view this image ... this is a large, proper night-time late bar full of a much younger crowd than a lot of where we've seen throughout the night... It's packed out, even on the first weekend of January and is ploughing out some utterly classic old 'skool' dance anthems that take me right back to my younger days, supping on an Orange Bacardi Breezer in the 'big clubs' back home in 1998/99 please log in to view this image ... You know what... Dick Turpin would turn over in his grave... I might just stay here forever... please log in to view this image please log in to view this image Hitting up some of the all time dancefloor greats in Baby D, N-Trance and Phats & Small... the audience don't look old enough to remember them... but the vibe is BANG ON! To top off our night, we then headed back to our Travelodge where the bar stays open until 3am!! So, of course, there was time for one quick nightcap before bed haha! So... what do we think of Hull and its 'Old Town?' I'll be honest, over the last year, we've been to some of London's oldest pubs, some of York's oldest pubs and some of Edinburgh's oldest pubs and Hull's Old Town is right up there with any of those!! Ye Olde White Harte has firmly cemented itself within my favourite top ten places that we have been to thus far and as a whole the town is just brilliant! The people of Hull are polite and courteous... and SO, SO friendly, we met loads of great people, chatted with them and heard stories... The town was already getting going by 430pm with a party vibe at The Empress... even on the first week of January... and it was still banging down in the town at Dirty Dicks at almost 2am when we decided to call it a night! There are beautiful cobbled streets, old pubs steeped in history, cocktail bars, karaoke and a party atmosphere going on everywhere you look... For me, it's as good a night out as anywhere we've been... think York but without the price tag! Loved it... can't wait to get back and do the rest! All those people out enjoying themselves drinking from early doors. But Hull is an impoverished place where the cost of living crisis means people can’t afford to go to football even at the low prices on offer.
Have seen that mentioned many times. And on the highlights on youtube a City fan in response to another saying 12,200 was a poor crowd (and1,800 of those were from Birmingham) said it was down to Hull being poor and the cost of living crisis. Goods to see bigger crowd but would they pay the prices some others have to? That low yesterday that my train ticket was over twice the price of my admission price. An even bigger difference for some others no doubt.
Drink in Ebenezer's and you'd be blotto for the price of an adult ticket in the East Stand at City, oh and nice to see you, your son and grandson, yesterday. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Good to see you and your mate. And brother. They both enjoy going in Ebeneezer’s. Makes a change for grandson who does not get in pubs much at a dinner time and gets asked for ID at night. There is a rule in Brid where under 18s have to be out by 9pm ( and they wonder why families holiday abroad). A couple of places used to let them into play pool and watch football but they have started going round enforcing it again as Brid must be a crime fee area. Something to do with licensing in holiday places which seems odd. Families do not go on holiday to be back in their accommodation by 9pm. Under 16s aren’t allowed in amusement arcades unaccompanied after 6pm which would have screwed us up in 1963, 1964 and 1965 when we spent half the day lounging about in Joyland.
Indeed. I'd get half way through that session and forgotten what country I'm in, let alone remember what drinks were on sale or historical details about the pub.
If he'd said no one was out I think you'd have loved that too. No nightlife in the UK, in Spain they don't go out to eat til 3am, etc.
My kind of night , in Newcastle for the Sunderland game , leaving the wife at the hotel and going to the match , then out on the town Saturday night , 3 weeks later we’ll do about a half of that tour in town - or fall over !!
Yeah we were told that when we arrived in Bilbao last May. Unfortunately nearly all the bars and restaurants were closed by 9pm. Loved the place but very difficult to find anywhere that stayed open late.
You were not looking very hard. Loads more than quoted here there are over 3,400 bars in Bilbao. Some don’t open until 10pm. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/spain/bilbao/articles/best-bilbao-nightlife/
No where does it say they were on pints, and in fact he says he had a half in one place . "I went for half a Blueberry and Mango Sour called 'Tangled In Blue' from Salt brewing" which sounds a bit girly.
