Anybody ITK about Wendy’s? Is Papa’s at Bilton going the same way? Drove by the other day and there is some building underway,
I find it hard to understand but at Deepdale the main stand has a designated "Early Leavers" exit. It is one of two exits at one end of the stand. The other is the same size. but doesn't have anything like "Stuck it out till the bitter end" above it.
Wendy’s is an American chain that’s been going for decades, but after trying to break the British market in the 1990s, it failed and withdrew from the uk except for 1 in central London. My wife managed in the Leeds branch in 1996 when the euros were held, so it was full of Europeans, but no English people, who couldn’t get their head around a concept of burgers being made to order and taking longer than MacDonalds to get your food. Every time the euros are on my wife goes on about how the salad bar got used a lot by the Spanish fans in Leeds… the hull branch is apparently the largest Wendy’s in the world, which is quite a catch as there are thousands of Wendy’s worldwide. In my opinion, the food is exactly the same as any burger gaff, but I don’t eat fast food, so I’m not exactly the best person to judge. I could go on posting random Wendy’s facts, but cannot be bothered, I only took an interest because my wife will be impressed when I show her this.
For many years Wendy's were the largest burger chain in America, even now they're still the second biggest, after MacDonald's. There used to be a big flagship one in Cambridge Circus, opposite the Spice Of Life pub and it was really popular at the start of a night out in the late 80's/early 90's, as the basement was unstaffed and dimly lit and the tables had glass tops, so people went into to chop their speed.
After telling my wife of the Wendy’s interest, she’s blessed me with more Wendy’s facts. The founder was called Dave Thomas and he originally started at KFC and apparently worked with the actual Colonel. Dave Thomas was adopted. Wendy’s were famous for square burgers and used the slogan “we don’t cut corners” Wendy’s invented the drive thru. Wendy’s won the best fast food retailer 17 years in a row in America in the 80s and 90s. My wife served Duaine ladego, (athlete) in the Leeds Wendy’s. If she remembers that now, she clearly fancied him… and yes, my wife remembers a fair amount of drug taking in the Leeds branch, usually by the staff.
The Turkish Super Cup Final last night was called off on the day. For some reason it was being played in Saudi. Both Galatasaray and Fenerbahce refuse to play without 'Atatürk' on their shirts, referring to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder of the Turkish Republic. The authorities in Saudi Arabia banned his picture, and stopped anyone entering the stadium with it on. Both teams decided to boycott the match.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67842913 Ataturk launched a programme of revolutionary social and political reform to modernise Turkey, serving as its first president from 1923 until his death in 1938. These reforms included the emancipation of women, the abolition of all Islamic institutions and the introduction of Western legal codes, dress, calendar and alphabet, replacing the Arabic script with a Latin one
It’s the 100th anniversary of him becoming President and there were pictures of him everywhere when I was there, in a fairly standard format (that was the actual 100th celebration weekend mind you) I assume it was similar on the shirts Wonder how many fans had travelled from Turkey though
Looks like it was a picture of him on the shirts and the phrase ‘peace at home, peace around the world’ Too political Saudis said
