A mate of mine thought Ofsted was the enemy, when he was teaching. His opinion changed when he turned to the Dark Side. I don’t bring it up often.

Not going. Not in the right state of mind for what happened at Swansea <laugh>

My sister will go in my place and I’ll watch it on the box.

Got a soft spot for Plymouth as I went to uni there but still hope we smash them!

I didn't notice KWP moving back, where did Jack go?

I may have missed some of the finer detail later in the game as I couldn't see clearly through my tears of joy

JS was subbed off that's when KWP dropped back to RB. JS didn't do bad at RB but Swansea didn't have an effective left winger. The biggest danger early doors was down to the space afforded on their right wing, wth Manning virtually on his own.

Manning's positioning is terrible though. Whether Edozie is able to get back or not, Manning is liability.

(For context, a crossfield ball has just been played by Swansea)

Look where Manning is. He's in the frigging D. The RW has so much space. Manning's about ten yards out of position.

    Manning3.png

It takes Manning 3 seconds to get to his man, by which time it's too late to tackle or stop the cross.

    Manning4.png

He does this multiple times every game. It baffles me why Russ doesn't address it.

I think he has, it happens both sides, I think we overload all the time.
Part of the plan and against most teams in this league we get away with it.(it works)
It's possible you dont rate Manning so notice that side more or maybe this level of opposition mostly dont have a decent left sided attack.

It's just bad defending plain and simple.

Most opposition at this level have two pacey wingers. It's the most predictable thing about this league.

Good left wingers off the top of my head: Philogene, Bali Mumba, Liam Miller, Mavididi, Cryscencio, Jack Clarke, Diangana...

It’s actually not that bad tbh. You are taught as a full back to be very close to the centre back in that situation so nobody can run in between you if they cross the ball into the box and have a free header at the back post close to goal.

If the winger stays wide (as they have here) then so be it. You then go to close him down and the right back should mirror what you’ve done on the other side (tucking in and protecting the back post). Ultimately protecting the goal is the main aim.

This. People were moaning that Swansea's RW was in loads of space when Swansea switched the play. Well, that's always going to happen.

Yeah it’s very basic full back defending to tuck in. He probably is slightly too narrow but not enough to warrant any abuse. If he stayed wide and the winger cut across him at speed and the cross went over the centre back and winger had a good chance everyone would be moaning about how **** he was as well.

I don’t rate him much but this isn’t a scenario where he ****ed up, and I haven’t noticed him being out of position in these scenarios before.

He is usually out of position when he gets caught up the pitch and he has given the ball away as he is ****

I think you under-estimate him on a simple matter here
If Russ didn't want him where he is when we have the ball its very simple to tell him where he want him to be, but he wants to play with inverted full-backs and so that's where he goes

However, I agree that its a risk as if he doesn't get to the winger before he's high enough up the pich to get in a good cross, on occasions the cross is coming in when he's still not quite there. I don't know if Russ finds that acceptable and expects the CBs to cover or not

I don't know if there's an anticipation issue though, as its only a matter of a second or two's difference between getting there in time or too late

I'll be watching this over our next few games

I get it. I know all that. But he's still way out of position. Doesn't need to be that close to Bednarek. The strikers are both covered.

Also, that cross led to their best chance. The one that Lowe skied over. A better payer would have got it on target.

It looks like he switches off sometimes. Even in the above clip, when he finally starts trying to catch up with the RW, his body language seems to be saying, 'oops, didn't see him there'.

It’s not the striker he is worried about, it’s the winger cutting across him into the space between him and Bednarek if he is too wide.

We’ll probably have to agree to disagree on this one. We can both agree that Manning is **** in the main

So you think the other full back was out of position for the Lowe chance as well? I think he was the other winger and had acres from that cross as the fullback had tucked in

A cross is different from a cross-field pass though.

(Sorry, I meant the pictures I put up were of the Lowe chance)

Can’t see from the pic where the pass came from. Anything in our half and Manning did the right thing tucking in

I don’t know if they train differently these days.
I haven’t seen other teams defending like this. Manning should be between the D and the corner of the box. He should not be in the D. You cannot give your winger 20 yards on you. I am with CGT on this.
