The listed "Future Champions" bumper at Navan has certainly lived up to its name over the years. Recent winners include subsequent grade 1 scorers Sir Gerhard, Envoi Allen, Samcro, Don Cossack and the mighty Dunguib. The first 4 in that list underline the fact that Gordon Elliott likes to target the race and he has 2 entered today in the Gigginstown silks - both priced around the 4/1 mark and both previous winners. Jalon D`looks the likelier of the two to my eyes but the favourite this morning is Redemption Day. Not sure I would be rushing to take 7/4 on him on the back of a 599 day absence and I guess this is just a pipe opener prior to going hurdling. John Kiely showed he can train a champion bumper winner last season and his Scamall Bawn could surprise a few at more rewarding odds. Whoever wins it is definitely a race to watch with the notebook out.
The (14:30) at Southwell, a Class-4 Novices' Hurdle over an extended 2m4f on softish ground, gives the Kayf Tara gelding, High Treason, a squeak if fit from a 251-day absence. Suited by this step-up in trip. Sam Twiston-Davies rides for the family stable of Nigel Twiston-Davies. 4/1 (Bet365/Wm.Hill) best price at time of writing. .................... The (14:45) at Carlisle, a Class-4 Handicap Chase over 3m2f on softish ground, gives the Leading Light gelding, Return Fire, a chance to shine in this affair. Wears tongue-strap, as usual. Patrick Wadge (3) on board for the Lucinda Russell stable. 10/3 (W.Hill) best price at time of writing. .................... (plus e/w double) .................... (Prices from Oddschecker)
