Going out fighting at least - an excellent game in an extremely hostile stadium. Not too bothered TBH, we've more important things to focus on.
It’s like our players sabotaging their own team. It’s happened in every CL match. How can you win if your GK keeps making elementary mistakes? realistically we are out.
Defensively we look weak as piss. Game management is a thing right? Onana is just not good enough. He should be saving EVERY single one of those 3 goals. Why exactly did we get rid of De Gea again? If we'd had him in this group we'd have qualified already. And his distribution, his greatest attribute, is bang average as well 3 goals scored away to each of Bayern, Copenhagen, Galatasary... for 1 point But it's ok lads, the RESULTS against Everton and the mighty Luton mean something... apparently.
If you can't see the positives from that then I think you're looking in the wrong place. We were ok defensively actually. It's two piss poor goal keeping efforts, and another average one. From the keeper forward, we were pretty solid. The centre halves played well, it's good to have both first choice full backs back. Both Garnacho and Antony were good, as was Bruno. Forget Fernandes giving the free kicks away, both should have been dealt with. Centre mid is a bit of a problem. Amrabat was tidy without being great, and McTominay is what he is, nothing better than just about ok. I'd have taken him off for Mainoo, but either way Mainoo played well in replacing Amrabat. We missed a **** ton of chances. Loads. Pellistri and Martial could have both won it, and McTominay blasted a couple wide/over. At least we created some.
There were lots of positives going forward. That's exactly how we should be playing. Players gave 100%, no one can fault the work rate. We need more of the same. That's all performance. But we do have a mental problem defensively. Either we keep a clean sheet or we crumble as soon as we let in the first. There's no inbetween. That is poor. As I said on the other thread, it's not a choice between performance or result. You should be able to manage the game to do both, and we are weak at that. It'll be interesting to see what they look like in the next game at Newcastle. It'll only mean something if we carry on with more of the same going forward, it will be a positive, but let's see how we are defensively, and I'm talking about controlling the midfield as much as I am the CBs and goalie.
And btw whoever said that the result against Everton was largely because they fluffed their chances was proved right tonight. And this is our problem, weak opposition masks the same problems at times which then gets found out as soon as we come up against a side that are any good.
If we're honest, there is no way we were ever winning this competition. At all. We just have to qualify again next season. Not sure I'm that arsed about finishing third and going into the UEFA, I think were better off completely out if it and focusing on the league form as we more than likely won't win that one either! It won't do any harm having no mid week games.
Yeh true, I think going out the League Cup was the bigger blow. Just being left in the FA Cup is not great. When I watched that first half, I thought something has changed. At one point a few weeks back I thought he might have lost the dressing room. But tonight showed that's not the case. They were well up for it tonight. The fight and hunger is nothing like we've seen all season. It's definitely a step in the right direction. Onana looks to be a colossal fck up though.
At least you'll be playing our reserves on Saturday lads...you really have no excuses should you not win.
We need less distractions in our current predicament to reset the expectations for the season. I’d take a good run in the league than getting to the last eight only to crash out. The good thing is that we are starting to score goals again. That will bold well going forward.
Our group is nuts. One way or another, a team that wins just two games will go through to the next round. It could even be a team that wins just 1 game ffs
And 6 points. Record lowest qualifying points? Copenhagen going through by drawing their last match if Utd as expected not beat Bayern. Keane accusing Spurs of being Spursy again last weekend. Utd in the CL are beyond that
Bayern are through at a canter though, so they might field an extremely weakened side in their last game against you guys. There is always that hope.
