I think it's something to do with ice crystals in the upper atmosphere, so common in some cold countries but much less common for the UK and as we all know now the temps plummeted last night. The bad weather thing is more folklore tales but as it is related to a drop in temps there is some substance behind it. I even read some tale it was used by some religions as the reason for the halo's associated with faith, but I didn't read much into it, but it did leave one question for me, did it snow when Jesus was born, and the answer was probably not as snow is very rare in the area .
