Nissan received a lot of concessions from the government. That's why they stayed. Plus the cost to relocate cannot be under estimated
I've no problem with government 'buying jobs', every country does it one way or another. The more employment we have the better for everyone.
Great news for jobs and growth but it’s a damn shame what’s happened to all that green belt land that’s been industrialised. It was a lovely area at one time.
I don't recall any of the Ladies qualifying their claim when they were ignoring the wishes of the majority of their electorate. As I recall it was in effect -- Vote Brexit and Nissan leaves UK. No if's or but's, no caviat's. In fact a most definate prediction with the full weight of their Political Wisdom behind it.
Quite a few in all honesty. Not least former minister Alan Johnson who did the media rounds here saying so. Similar certain predictions were made about Esso-Shell , Unilever and others. All part of the hyperbole used by both elements of the argument. Seven years after the vote it has been proved to be neither a silver bullet nor a disaster, the latest figures showing that trade has been barely affected as a totality, though there has been friction placed in the way of some of it. But the main thing is that Nissan are fully committed. Good things will follow good things.
We obvoiously read different papers, or, more likely, my selective memory is different to yours. For instance I would claim that while NISSAN indicated that it would be difficult to stay in the UK if BREXIT were to happen, they didn't say they would definately move out. They also indicated at a very early stage that they were open to discusions with Government ahead of The Referendum. I understood this to mean, 'make us an offer we can't refuse', Back to MY selective memory, I THINK that the article I read, was by the Member for Houghton. I do recall even after The Referendum she kept hammering on about holding a 'Peoples Vote' . I wonder what she thought that The Referendum was? And YES, I admit to being biased. I was pro Brexit. AND I'm anti any Party Head Office selecting our MP's for us, as happened in the 2010 election. Not that I have any doubts about the Member for Houghton deserving her nomination. But she could probably have got there on merit, without the dubious help of London HQ.
During the run up to the Brexit Vote, our three local MP's were campaigning for a Remain vote. Their stance was, if you vote to Exit, then Nissan WILL up sticks and off. Looking back, they were all wrong.
Weren't they just repeating what Nissan kept saying* ... ... I don't remember anyone stating it as fact. *"If the U.K. crashes out of the EU at the end of the month the chairman of Nissan Europe has said he could not rule out the closure of Nissan’s factory in Sunderland." ....... etc.
Your quote has it. (And thaks for that). Because that isn't the same as saying Nissan WILL leave. The campaign mounted localy, by our MP's, was attempting to use scare tactics by claiming the closure as a FACT, should we vote to leave. It didn't work, localy. But it managed to iritate me to the extent that it still anoys me after about seven years. (Not that this will worry our Parliamentary Representitives).
That's fair enough, I just didn't see anyone stating it as fact. Then again I don't live locally, not even to myself
