Congratulations mate I've been there since before we lost both Dortmund games. Things will only keep improving but not without a few blows along the way.
https://www.tntsports.co.uk/footbal...ions-league-highlights_vid2023349/video.shtml Just watching the highlights back, that first goal, really? It's a complete cluster **** all over tbh. Schar - where the ****s he gone/been? No idea why he's up there but he messes up not cleaning up the first ball? Lascelles has to win the ball or give up the foul if he's stepping out like that, especially when Schar is playing in front of Bruno! We now have 2 cb's 12-15 yards outside of our box AHEAD of the ball, I mean I'm sure he's not one for over the top rant's but I'd be going full Alex Ferguson at half time tbh if I was Eddie Howe. We then miss another opportunity to get close to the ball and rid before it even get's to Halls iwho's unlucky as he's coming over to cover for our 2 cb's who are on their lolidays and the ball goes back the other way past him. Finally Trippier, instead of challenging the player/attacking the ball in the 6 yard box drops off to the line - that's the most baffling bit for me, get tight try and get a foot in, don't **** off to the line and leave him unmarked in the middle of the goal 5 yards out! I'm sure it isn't as positive as it looks but from those highlights we could have had 2 or 3 before their second - Trippier/Hall link up from the corner and the ball across the 6 yard box is immense play and we should be tucking that away, then Joelinton's header needs to go in if you want anything in these games also - wrong technique for me, spinning balls like that need putting back the way they are coming, trying to flick it in the far post is so difficult. Then another ball across the six yard box we can't find a player with. Also saw some highlights of Longstaff getting shoved over in the box - was it a bit soft? Finally for this rant! Trippier needs to sort his dead balls out, so often he doesn't beat the first man, not sure why he's on every single one tbh I'd rather Bruno took a few of these wider/deeper ones personally. Pope also not covering himself in glory with the second goal but can't really complain as even if he saves it their player has 20 yards of time and space to slot in a rebound.
The Bruno shout on free kicks isn't a bad call. Pope's been erratic for a while, then he goes on a run of clean sheets and everything gets forgotten.
Think we need to stop with all this ****ing detailed autopsy every time we lose and have a bit of a reality check in terms of where we are. Eddie Howe has been in charge for two years now, I’d love to see people’s lists of low points in these last two years and compare them to the 14 that preceded it! Enjoy the ride people, there’s gonna be some bumps along the way but in 2-3 years time we’ll be looking back on all of this knowing where it all started! We humped PSG 4-1 for ****s sake and beat Man Utd with 9 full backs in our team…and we’re not scraping around trying to sign the likes of Hamza Choudary on loan on deadline day!
The first season he was here we had a lot of joy from set pieces he took but it was because we were a lot more inventive. Plenty of short corners etc. There was one very good corner against Dortmund where he played it low to player coming towards him who held it up while Trippier ran in, then backheeled it him and he crossed it but no one on the end. We need to do more work on set piece routines as we have got a bit predictable. To be honest set pieces which are slung into the box, as long as they are in the right space, its up to the players to get on the end of them, which often involves being smart enough to block off marking players etc.
Attempted a few different ones recently.... Newcastle don't have many players that are good with their heads in the opposition box.. Wilson and errerrrmmm
Lascelles is the one you are looking for but I know you cant bear to associate him with the word good.
Fair points, of course, though isn't the point of a forum to air views and reflect on what we've seen?! I don't care if it's Yeovil or Man City, if we don't win I'll offer an opinion as to why we didn't! I mean, the thing is we're just miles ahead of "schedule". We were supposed to qualify for the CL I'd guess either this season or next, optimistically, when we would have a squad that might cope better. The exposure is great for commercial income and therefore spending, but for example it's supposed" to be an Adidas kit in the CL, not Castore! It's not surprising we then find it tough.
So we've got fans suggesting Trippier is the issue, but can only list Wilson and a player with about 1 goal a year that can head a ball .. hmmm. I'll stick with backing trippier and sight the fact the sides lacking in a certain area other than delivery.
Statistics actually suggest we are not that bad at set pieces: This is a breakdown of all goals by type for PL games to date. This is ordered by Set Piece We have a relatively low % of goals scored from set plays but that is because we have a high number of goals from open play. We are in the top 7 for actual goals from set plays
Trippier is largely why and I go immediately back to my point which is that Newcastle are not blessed with players that are good in the air in the opposition box. Weirdly I think they have only conceded from 1 corner all season. We seem to get this alot which is fans going after our best players, but as your stats show its not a problem so no need to change it.
Just adding I'll now get told I do with lacelles and longstaff but thats because they're unfortunately not good enough for the quest. I'll stand by that until proven right.
The good move you're talking about was aimed at Wilson but he was in the completely wrong position and hes too slow these days to readjust
