Frustrating and/or promising?

  1. Is it frustrating or promising that we got raped by city, but we could have easily scored 3 goals yesterday?

    Is it both?

Ben Arfa managed to unlock City twice, once with a nice run and a through ball, and one with some skill, good acceleration and he was probably trying to be too clinical with his finish. He should have just smashed it instead of trying to place it really.

City definitely deserved to win, but we still created chances, and probably should have drew that game, and on another day we may have.

So, are we more frustrated? Or more excited by the fact that despite being dominated by the best team in the league, we could have gotten something from the game?

    <applause>

    it only took 9 words.

kudos on making another article though (this isnt sarcasm <yikes>) the boards a bit dead recently.

Happy with the game, even despite missing chances and gifting them goals. we showed we can cut it against the best, and with a bit more luck/clinical play possibly get a result in similar games in the future, even missing a couple of players.

I was pleased with our performance. No frustration for me really, I never expected us to get anything from the game or to really trouble City, so to see us create the chances we did was pleasing.

City are a class apart. When they can bring the likes of Silva off the bench you just have to hold your hands up and admit that they are in a different league to us (metaphorically, before any pedant points out that we are in fact in the same league).

    Frustrated? No. Excited? Always!

I was dissapointed with Ba for our first chance. He should have placed it in the bottom corner instead of going for power. Raylor just had an off day but if he plays like he did yesterday vs Nani then we will get murdered.

Looking forward to seeing Ben Arfa against Ferdinand. He looks like he is starting to find form and his mojo. I think he and Cabaye will improve as each game comes by plus Tiote and Obertan should be back.

From a non-Newcastle point of view, it has got to have been encouraging. Matches like yesterday won't define your season, but the lesser ones will, and as far as thats concerned so far so good. Getting anything out of these games is a bonus and to do so any team will need to score as conceding is almost a certainty. You will only score by creating chances and while some weren't converted yesterday, who is to say they won't go in another day.

We cut the City defence open at times, they're the best team in the league, that's good enough for me. Created our chances, but we were put under more pressure than we would've been against other teams. Very pleased, would like to see what HBA can do to other teams now with worse defences. The pressure's off now to be honest. Lets go on another unbeaten run, starting next week.

Precisely. For me, we were always going to lose that game and it wasn't one we were expected to win, and they're not a team that we "need to be beating". We put in, at times, a decent performance. And against a team like City we did alright.

Considering they're a class apart from the rest of the league, our performance looks promising for next week. Ben Arfa v J. Evans <laugh>

<ok> You are right AH. To say we played Man City, a team that beat Man Utd 6-1 at Old Trafford. Away from home, and even play good football. We did very very well. Yes, it may have been a loss. But, I was rather proud of the boys yesterday.

Both. We didnt get raped to be fair, we gifted them 3 goals and should have got at least one more ourselves.

Frustrating that we played well and lost but that was down to how good Man City are, so for me both think we can finish somewhere about 7th this season.

Don't think I've ever been so positive about a loss <laugh> Not sure whether it was Ben Arfa or Sammy that impressed me the most either. Very very pleased. Sammy could have had a mare and had his confidence shot, but he didn't, and that's no doubt going to be good for him.

Plus, I really think the pressure's off now. There was always that " maintain unbeaten record " thing that was always there. It was nice and all, but there's no pressure now to go out and maintain that record. It's a shame we're going to lose our top 4 spot very shortly but who cares, from now on we'll probably maintain a top 8 spot anyway and that's what I'm happy about.

cheers lad <ok> nice to hear some appreciation from an outsiders perspective (something which can sometimes be lacking - i had a quick look on a ManC forum and very few even acknowledged we turned up. that despite their dominance, the result could have been different had we shown a bit more composure in both attacking and defending)

i reckon we gifted them the game, we did all the hard work, when they were supposed to be knackered, we let them attack us, even though they were light at the back, too much organisation at times just totally left us vunerable, if we had of just put our foot in like in the first 30 seconds of the game, they looked all over the place under pressure, most of there play was just the back 4 passing around, if we did that, they would have been tired as **** after 20 minutes, especially with full attack, the score seems to have whacked things right of perspective, we gave them far too much respect and let them just pass the ball.

it showed the flaws in taylors game though, when him and guti can double up, we can have anyone but as soon as wing backs come in, he seems abit too tentative, that being said ben arfa showed some lovely movements and skill but some of his passing was too much or too little, it was very frustrating to see us doing well and standing off with such skilled players infront of us, when it looked so clear we could have totally upset them with a little bit more aggression, the interceptions and tackles showed how many men they put forward and how exposed they were when they lost it.

i think we have good team, from what i saw yesterday, beating man united doesn't seem as big of a challenge, hopefully we will take the game too them and be more hungry to have the ball instead of doing all the running to get infront of them and just standing there like a divvy

How were we 'raped' by Man City? Because they spent the vast majority of the game passing the ball around without really doing anything? They needed a shocking individual error and two penalties - the second of which was a blatant dive - to get past us. I'm afraid your football knowledge is slightly lacking if you think we're going to play an away game at a team like City and match them for possession of the football.

We played well, defended as a solid unit yet again and as you say had three gilt-edged chances, and that's not including the one that went in. The difference between what happened yesterday and a perfect away performance was a couple of individual errors and not being quite clinical enough in attack. We battled to the end and managed to get a goal that could be vital at the end of the season. Already seen many City supporters say that we came away from the Etihad with dignity unlike some of their opponents so far, hopefully we can build on this and take some confidence to Man United who seem to have tightened up as a defensive unit but don't seem to be creating as many clear-cut chances for themselves. Sunderland had a really good go of it at Old Trafford last time out and I don't see why we can't either.

Thing with Sammy, like a few people have mentioned. Is that, if that was against, say Blackburn. Then we'd be saying he was poor etc. But, for a full debut, against the strongest team in England. He did well.

Yeah, fair enough, its a shame the unbeaten run has come to an end. But, I can only see this being a good thing. There is no pressure on us anymore, and people will be expecting us to have a landslide of poor results now. So, hopefully we'll be underestimated in our next 2 games, and get some points on the board.

    Roll on United!

  19. In terms of chances, we weren't raped by city, but in terms of possession and overall play we were. I'm pretty sure the possession was like 67 - 33%

They obviously missed Silva in terms of creating goal scoring opportunities, but overall we were dominated for most of the match really.

We were playing an away match against the best team in the league, did you expect us to dominate possession?
