    ah right.

in any event I was challenging the thought he was the best of the century and could name 3 and possibly 4 including lucas who have done more and better over longer.

    alonso
    fabinho
hamman (kind of the flop in his own half)
    lucas

I'm not even including slippy g in this as he was played there in his twilight years and not as good at it as mascherano

when people are that wrong and being argumentative without offering a shred of reasoned points then it should be said.

if I were asked to pick a 6 out of the whole century to give to klopp or rafa or whichever lfc manager it would be alonso all day every day.

To use more modern parlance, Mascherano was a midfield destroyer. That's what we're looking to replicate in Andre - size, technique and attitude. Alonso was a classy playmaker. No comparison - the gentleman and the ...
.. (looking for an acceptable word) erm rogue.

clearly never saw alonso kick 7 shades out of players.

the man was as tough as nails.

Best all round midfielder imo, better tackler, passer, runner, better brain and intelligence. plus he has a ginger bread which clearly meant he was trouble

you'll note I'm not actually dissing mascherano just pointing out alonso was just better.

clearly people have a glossy memory of the silly xabi whereas I know exactly why mourinho sent fat Frank out to do damage

mourinho I believe requested him for real and perez saud he was the only player in Europe that could do the job

You're probably right on all those things. Fact remains, Alonso and Mascherano had different roles, they weren't interchangeable and shouldn't be compared for the same position.

thats not the case. They stood side by side with masch on the right and alonso smashing lads on the left side covering agger striding forward or covering risse.

I'll just leave this here so people can enjoy. tackles, intercepts, passing, goals, assists, patrolling the no 6 position and just a sensational player.

Then look at this game, look at the relative positions of alonso and mascherano, they are in the same line doing the job. Alonso just did so much that he was the ULTIMATE 6. passing, shooting, free kicks, tackles, intercepts, stepping into cb when agger went on. take your pick. all the time moving, all the time looking for a pass but always there to make the tackle.

the point is that alonso was the ultimate, but thats not to say mascherano wasn't right there beside him in the double 6 system rafa had.

Rafa only fell out with him over xabi not travelling to to birth of his child. thats apparently the real reason the fool let him go. and thats what imo cost him his job.

Nope, Alonso was awesome, I clearly said that.

The issue was your insistence on referring to players as a number six <doh>

Mascherano was a better DM. Alonso was the best deep lying playmaker, that's not saying he wasn't a very good DM too, just that Mascherano was better at the destroying role. You didn't get much going forward from Mascherano so Alonso was the better all round player of the two. Mascherano was still the better DM though.

As a pairing, they complimented each other very well, and with Gerrard, they made for the perfect trio.

(Mascherano was pivotal to our counter attacks though, used to always be on the edge of the box and move forward with pace)

6 controls the centre its that simple. The original point was best of the century. Imo if klopp had prime alonso today he'd piss the league

Mascherano would be more useful in the current team; dedicated DM that allows Zobo, AMC/Gravenberch to do their thing.

    except he wouldn't be!

we could finally stop pretending trent is a a reverse full back/6 and tell.him to go cross it.

alsonso covered more ground and made more passes so as I said give klopp alosno and he absolutely rinses this league
