Just what I was going to say. Islanders are not great travellers…for instance I live in Newport and haven’t been to Ryde for years…after all it is 6 miles away. Therefore, the Island is divided into Blues and Reds based on proximity of ferry.

 

You don't want to go travelling to Ryde - they don't like intellectuals there (Cue many Ryde-based responses, none of them polite)

 

True story: was travelling on a bus replacement service to Portsmouth Harbour when some strange and rough looking people got on. I whispered about it to my brother and he shushed me saying ‘Careful, they are Pompey fans, there’s a match on.’

 

And another story which I know to be true because I saw the video…perhaps you remember it. Saints fans were shaking a police barrier placed to separate fans at a rare Southampton v Portsmouth match when the barrier collapsed. After a pause for thinking, the Saints fans picked up the barrier and carried on shaking it. We must be lovers not fighters
