We have had 8 managers since Fergie left, some short term by performance some just temp by design and TBH most were scuppered by the Glazers and the CEOs. Fergie was obviously the biggest loss but David Gill was almost as big a loss as he seemed to get what we needed when we needed it despite the Glazers (though it must be said they have never seemed to balk at spending on players).
Seriously? You mean the person who was in charge for ~twenty years before the Glazers arrived, that bloke? The one who was subsequently starved of being able to refresh his squad to manage the debt, that one? The one who changed his entire MO of changing his main men in the team periodically. You mean that one? You need to wise up a bit mate.
Look at what we've spent on players down the years - the money has been there, the player selection is the issue.
If all of those players were absolutely manager selections then they are indeed culpable. They weren't. And we know this. From Moyes all the way through to Solskjaer, their hands were tied. The only manager I see as absolutely 100% culpable for his (and United's) own mess is Van Gaal.
Many years ago i knew two people who were employed ot OT (no not stewards or canteen ladies, people who worked in admin and were privy to much) and both told me indipendantly that every window fergie would identify positions that needed strengthening and hand Gill a list of 4 names in each position with the instruction "get me one of each". A man who knew his players.
And then, all of a sudden, there was 'no value in the market' and he allowed his teams to age before our eyes. No way on this ****ing earth did that man just decide, one morning, to change the way he worked. How some people do not see this is beyond belief.
I had a romantic notion for a short time (couple of weeks maybe) that he was saving the tranfer kitty for the new manager to bring in his own players but i soon ditched it.
Reality is he'll have realised these ****s would bankrupt the football club if he spent big on players. Moyes was also given **** all money, it was only after he'd ficked off that the likes if van Gaal and Mourinho started to spend big as they didn't really give a ****. From the point onwards, the debt only went one way. Up. And that's despite Woodward's commercial bollocks. Because it was off set by his headline signings and their ludicrous salaries.
Talking of Mourinho, guess who signed Lindelof. Well, you know the answer. Same bloke who then moaned he wasn't being backed in the market as he wanted a centre half, so set the ball in motion to be sacked. Yep, him. And Lindelof is still getting a ****ing game!! Take that **** in.
It’s been a recurring pattern with all post Fergie managers: from LVG to ETH. Good first full season with CL qualification, followed by splashing huge amounts on expensive players to “get to the next level” then complete disappointment with the team sliding down instead of improving. something must be wrong and must change: can’t be the players or the managers (they’ve been constantly changing )! The GGs and the lack of a credible footballing knowledge inside the executive are the constants.
I will repeat a name i mentioned earlier, David Gill. Replaced by Woodward and **** knows who's doing the job now but he has been almost as big a miss as Fergie in my mind.
We have now resorted to buying names/reputations. Look at some of our purchases on big wages over the last few years, Ronaldo, Zlatan, Casimero, Eriksen, Verane all great players in their day but sadly past it now. We should be looking at the great players of the now with a few years in front of them and the chance to get even better not names of yesteryear.
All these nonsense about the owners is fkin ridiculous! Not even Ten Haag would usher such tripe as the reason why we have failed so miserably! ETH has been given full control of the team and transfers. He has had all the support none before him had. His own choices have been dubious as many of you continue to document. But you still find it so hard to point out that the needs to bare responsibilities for matters which he has control over. The ownership talks only simply serve to divert attention from the big elephant in the room… a manager that is now appearing to be clueless!
I have given no stick to the manager, in fact i feel a little sorry for him at the moment because of the injury situation in defence. That said, the players look directionless and with some a total lack of interest which has to come down to the manager either through lack of motivation/tactics or a complete loss of the dressing room. Most of these players are much better than they are showing, World beaters no but good enough to contest top 4 at minimum. Something is wrong and the buck stops with the manager.
The contrast between the two managers yesterday was astonishing. ETH was for the most part immobile, sitting on high watching it all unravel while Pep was in the technical area for most of the game, shouting and pointing to each of his players in turn. In other words he was motivating them, instructing them, reminding them whereas ETH looked lost and clueless.
Yup! The players are directionless because everyone is utterly lost as to what they need to do because the manager is not effective. This diversion to talk about owners absolves Ten Haag of some responsibilities got on field events. It’s the owners fault really. Serious question, if the Glazers left tomorrow, is anyone really convinced that the team’s fortunes will change if ETH himself does not make really hard calls? Or is the expectation that new owners will better hold him accountable? Either way, the logic does not play out well that the manager is not to blame. Consequently, one has to conclude that it is the manager that either needs to change or be changed.
Haven't you noticed yet that sacking the manager never changes anything? At what point will it sink in that the club itself is the problem. Even the manager has a manager. Ten Hag isn't the very top man at United, it's no longer the Fergie days. He himself has a boss and it is everything above him that is the problem. There is an oft used saying. "The club is toxic/stinks from top to bottom" How does sacking the manager again solve that then? How? It's just kicking the toxic stinking can down the road for the next stooge to come along and also be sacked, while the people above him stay where they are. Why can't you see it? Why for **** sake?
