I thought the club would want something new but if that happens then fair enough, I'm 38 so the new badge is SAFC to me and I'd imagine that would be the case for a lot of fans now its been our badge for 26 years. But I wouldn't be against it changing. Looking back at the ship badges aswell I prefer the one with the blue in.
I was thinking this reading your other reasone to me. I'm sat thinking surely they would go new but they have released a lot of retro kits with ship badge on. So maybe I'm completely wrong
To be honest, I prefer the blue ship badge. I think in the modern era of "minimal crests" the ship badge is more akin to this than the current one.
Right, works better as an icon on a computer screen. Current one looks too small as you have to get all the detail in.
If you go on SAFC Store and into the training and travel section, there is loads of gear with the ship badge on. I feel its inevitable
It might be an unpopular opinion, but I prefer the current badge to the old ship badge. I'm 50, so it's not as if the current one is all I've known. But to me the old one is a dated design. It was designed back when Sunderland was still a major shipbuilding town, the boat is an SD14 general purpose cargo ship, designed in Sunderland but no longer built anywhere. That might have been fine in the 70s when ships were still being built on the Wear, but shipbuilding ended almost 35 years ago after declining massively during the 80s, and it's not coming back. Going back to it as the official badge just won't mean much as it doesn't reflect the city (and by extension the team) anymore, so to me would feel hollow and only for nostalgia purposes. At least the current one has the Wear Bridge and Penshaw Monument on it, two prominent local landmarks in the city. By all means still sell merchandise with the old badge on, update the current one if needs be, but personally I'd not be going back. But like I say, it's just my personal opinion.
You could say it would be a bit sad to go back to the ship when those days are long gone. We should look forward not back. I like the current badge and I'd be happy for it to stay the same for the foreseeable. I think it's classy and looks great.
I love the ship badge, for me it's the Sunderland Badge. In my ideal world if we could add something to it as as a reminder of our mining heritage, without losing the ship or blue sea, I'd be happy.
I agree with both sides of the argument as I like both badges for different reasons however if we go back to the ship design then I think it needs to be updated and have some reference to the mining heritage of the region. The new badge is great but is very busy and really could do with a simpler cleaner design so really I think my preference would be a new design incorporating the best of both worlds with a less busy and clean design.
https://throughrosetintedspecs.word... early 70s Sunderland, this was the right move. Interesting link here about the history of the badge. It seems that even when the ship badge was introduced it had some controversy as it replaced the "black cat" badge. And we didn't start wearing a badge on the shirt until 1977, having SAFC instead in various forms.
It's been said above, but I love our crest. It's classy. The minimal badges look half arsed. Bournemouths looks like something a school kid knocked up. I can see why clubs change for a one off season for an anniversary, perhaps revisit an old design. West Brom just used the WBA letters last season (not sure if they still do). I think we need to look to the future, I'm just worried some design team of Gen Zs come up with some "out there" design. Imo only, leave it be, because change it now, and a new trend could emerge where fans expect a badge change along with the new sponsorship
https://www.givemesport.com/premier...ges-ranked-from-work-of-art-to-needs-redoing/ Ofcourse this is just one organisations opinion, but the consensus is that the "older", classic badges are just better. The 1997 crest was designed at a time when the kits were lovely, effort and thought went into them, the stadium was being built, it was looking to the future. Now it's just meh (strips) with a slight obsession to the past. I'd hate to see what kind of ****e A.I would knock out. Imagine asking A.I to generate something that incorporates Industrial Sunderland Northern spier Bridge The Bridges The yellow car charger Echo 24 Dave the rave The station taxi cabin outside specsavers Southwick Green BnM at pallion retail park
The current badge, its whats inside the shield that i dont like. Penshaw monument with the sun/moon(?) behind it, and the bridge. The stripe sections diagonally opposite eachother? It looks very GCSE level. The rest of the badge looks old school, which I like. Inside the shield looks cheap and modern, which I dont.
Have the newer one inked on my leg and love the old one. Not arsed either way which way they go. The move to a better kit supplier is essential and hopefully we are all happy with it.
The bridge was used as a symbol of Monkwearmouth so I guess that's why it was in the design and people back then and still do today usually answer "when you can see Penshaw monument" when asked "how do you know you're nearly home". But I wouldn't be against the whole centre being red and white stripes myself. As for the rest of it, I love it.
