He wasn't swearing AT the referee, or anyone else for that matter. He was using a swear word out of frustration which is completely different. Professional players will no doubt be using swear words all the time during a game of football. They are grown men in their place of work and it goes on every day in any other workplace. <doh>

This is from Wolves from last year when he sent a player off for "aggressively running towards him". Watching it it's VERY similar to Saturday, in that he's already reaching for his card to book the player even before he's turned to see him. In both cases he decided to book someone straight away and as it happened the player was already booked. At best I'd say it shows he has no real feel or understanding of the game and is totally out of his depth. It would be interesting to know what he was like in Australia, was he always like this but got away with it as it's a lower standard, or is it something that's happened since he came here to mask his incompetence?

Imagine how many times Roy Keane and co would have been sent off for Man Utd back in the day, or are they exempt :emoticon-0138-think.

Gillett has made a rod for his own back.....everyone will be watching his next game to see what he does with a player who questions him....

I always thought he was a good ref - there is that well documented video where he's miked up and you can hear him reasoning with the players. Clearly that all went out the window on Sat when he attempted to make it all about him

I reckon it'll be a while before he referees another EPL or high profile Championship game. We're in the international break right now, so no games until 21/10. I reckon then and the week after he'll be either VAR or fourth official, keeping him out of the way. There's games on the weekend of 4/11 and 11/11 then another international break. I can see him being kept out of the way until around then. The FA cup first round is on 4/11 and league cup games are on 31/10 and 1/11 so he might get one of those (I'd say FA cup if any), so it gives time for things to calm down and hope people forget. But I'll predict that there'll be some more controversy with him before long.

He's basically been fast tracked into the EPL in a little over 2 years from coming over from Australia. The A League is (or at least was when I last saw some a little while back) generally conference level at best. Taking a ref from that level and putting them into the top flight without them spending any significant time in league 2, league 1 or the Championship to develop is crazy. The fact that he's been a VAR official more than a ref this season and that Saturday was him being assessed to take EPL games says he's not up to it at this level. If he was an English referee with the stuff he's done so far, he'd be getting dropped down to league 1 or 2, I think it's only the fact that he's been brought over and fast tracked that's stopped it happening now because it would look bad.

Totally agree mate....the reasoning bit that he missed was that at half time....some 20 seconds away....he saying to Neil.....do that again and I will have to book you per the new rules of the game which I have to follow.....so cool down over half time and the next move will be up to Neil. Also, quick mention to TM reminding him of the new rule and as ref I don't want to spoil this game....common sense right? Neil doesn't listen then at least he could say I spoke with TM.

i thought the 'new rules' were to protect the officials and to stop players running up and surrounding them while waving imaginarycards in the air etc, which i will add, i agree with 100%.

i also think that a word in an ear during a game is normally enough to calm a player/situation down, nobody really wants to spoil a good, well matched game with a sending off for something so trivial.

i have seen many reports on the incident mainly wondering wtf the ref was doing from other experienced refs, that alone tells me he got it well wrong but imagine if that had been during a high profile premier league game.

Just watched Escape To Victory and have to say this referee was worse than the one in that film!

Watched the Ireland NZ game on Saturday. Listening to the ref throughout the game was absolutely superb. Tell the crowd why they make a decision. They darent do that in football as then they couldn’t say there was no bias!
