I don't believe a single thing he says. "Every penny" of the money that we didn't have in the first place will now be spent on grand new schemes? Most of which will be forgotten about, cancelled or completely unachievable from the start. The sooner we have a general election and get these charlatans out, the better.
On the subject of a general election and off the back of this bad press with HS2 I fully expect the personal smear campaigns to be ramped up against Labour. Not in the hope of winning over voters but in the hope that people don't bother voting and they remain in government by default. Many people don't like Starmer, and I'm certainly not his biggest fan, but I don't think there is a party on earth that would do a worse job than the current government. We have the most spineless, out of touch PM I can ever remember who will probably now disappear for a few days hoping things calm down a bit. Everyone has a right to vote or abstain but personally the idea of not voting for a party because they "might" not be any better is my idea of madness. That is the only way I can see these remaining in power and its frightening that might actually happen.
So the good news for Manchester is that the HS2 saved money (what’s left after what’s been spent so far)will be spent on local services , roads , infrastructure etc. Can’t wait to see the north easts roads and transport after the tens of billions expenditure from what they’re saving on HS3

One of the few bright spots for the Conservative government came in April when the end of the recession was finally declared after nearly three years. Unemployment had touched 3,000,000 by the turn of the year, but had dipped to 2,800,000 by Christmas as the economic recovery continued.... however, I'll remember it more for the last shift at Monkwearmouth Colliery which ended coal mining in the Durham coalfield after at least 700 years. Time for a change of government.
Lets see what they say next week. I cant remember a party conference speech so heavy on policy as this one. Like you say, he has pressed go on election campaigning. He is miles behind, or rather his party is, but he has put the policy ball into Labours court. Personally I think post 16 educational reform is much needed. I applaud his intention. It will be bloody hard to achieve, but worth the cost and effort (unlike HS2). Be really interesting what other parties say about it, because it wont win votes I suspect, but is good for the future of our young people. Roll on next week. Said it already this is an interesting conference season so far.
I know someone who has at Tory party conference as a voluntary sector rep and someone said ‘when people vote next October’. That’s become the hot favourite for an election date.

when one party can clearly explain the massive drop in military/policing/hospital/ambulance/fire service workers and funding etc plus explaining why 'anyone that lands here' gets plenty to help them yet those on disability keep losing money also when they are going to 'get tough' on those able to work but choose the easy life of being state/tax funded...throw in a little bit of hitting the tax dodgers and the mega rich a wee bit more, along with a promise to get the aforementioned workforces back up to what they should be i might even vote for them. PS: electric vehicles are not the answer, one bloke's car decided to just drive itself at 30mph until the police managed to stop it...one car, imagine if 2 or 3 decided to do the same in rush hour along the motorways, never take control of a vehicle away from the driver.

I think you'd have to fundamentally change the way we do and report on politics to achieve what they're asking here. GMB wouldn't be able to ask the Foreign Secretary a question on whether transgender women should be allowed in women's changing rooms, for example. The response would always be 'not my brief, and I'm not risking being accused of lying'. Asking the PM a really detailed policy question would be bounced back with 'I can't say anything other than a general comment because that's the health/defence/whatever secretary's area of expertise' I mean, I'd quite like to see it. It would eliminate this now all pervading 'gotcha' culture in political reporting. Mind I'd also make avoiding questions on their areas of expertise a reason to cut an MP off in an interview as well as talking about the other side unless specifically asked.

Does anyone believe the new transport promises, from Sunak, will actually replace the old promises on HS2 ... ... he's a truly empty vessel imo, lots of noise, no action.
Its 100% the right thing to do, the issue is it should have been cancelled years ago when it was obvious the costs were spiralling out of control. It needs to be completely rethought.
