Good Morning. It's Thursday 5th October, and here are the latest headlines from Elland Road

Whites return to top six with comprehensive yet uninspiring win

Leeds climbed back into the top six with a comprehensive yet uninspiring performance, against a disjointed QPR side, as clueless as Gareth Ainsworth fashion sense (either that or he got dressed in the dark).

Reaching the half-way line was a joyous occasion for the two QPR commentators, who knew as much about the Leeds players as the Hoops knew about attacking.

When Leeds took the lead through Summerville after just nine minutes after a clever ball by Rutter, many assumed the floodgates will open, and the Whites would chalk up a scoreline synonymous with Headingley; yet for all their dominance, they only managed three shots on target all night!

Along with the Bermuda Triangle, and Loch-Ness Monster, puzzled historian will look back on last night's match at Elland Road always wondering how Daniel Farke's men only scored once; but it's difficult to criticise too much with three points in the bag, and five clean sheets out of six.

Bamford should be ashamed of himself

TV pundit Tim Sherwood says Patrick Bamford should be ‘ashamed’ of himself after Asmir Begovic was wrongly sent off in the dying minutes of last nights match at Elland Road.

The Hoops shot-stopper was shown a straight red card, as it appeared he took out the Leeds striker after being put through on goal. Replays show that the one time England star opted to jump out of the way instead of getting clattered by the 6' 7 Serb, but went to ground rather theatrically anyway, leading David Webb to send Begovic for an early bath. Bamford later revealed to Gareth Ainsworth that there was no contact

“I don’t think there is any (contact),” “When I look at the replay. I think Patrick (Bamford) might be a little ashamed when he sees this. “He has gone down. When you see it first, it looks like Asmir (Begovic) might have caught him with the way Patrick goes down.

“Jimmy Dunn gets done in behind. He toes it. When you look at it from a different angle. You see the gap. He doesn’t touch him and he goes down. He got a red card. Very important for this team. He has been outstanding Asmir Begovic since he has been at QPR. “But surely they are going to appeal that and get off it.”

Anthony to miss Robins game with injury

Jaidon Anthony looks set to miss Saturday's visit of Bristol City after picking up an injury last, night during his first start for the Whites. He impressed with both his pace, and attacking prowess, adding some much needed creative spark, during an otherwise dull first half

He picked up the injury during the latter stages of the first 45 minutes, after colliding with team mate Pascal Struijk. He came out for the second half, but was less influential, and was substituted after 65 minutes. After the game, Daniel Farke revealed that Anthony had rolled his ankle.

With little over 48 hours until the Bristol City match, it would be foolish to involve Anthony, especially with a two week International break, until we visit Carrow Road on the 21st October.

A win and a clean sheet is all we can ask, anything else is a bonus. A shame Anthony got injured but you’d imagine not too serious if he came out for 20 minutes of the second half

Morning all. Nothing to add to that rubbish last night.Got me thinking this morning. Two years ago we signed up to the Jesse Marsch philosophy, Newcastle to the Eddie Howe on. Last night, while we were huffing and puffing against QPR Newcastle were destroying PSG. Two years a long time in football when you're owners are clueless

    Morning all,

A steady win where we never under any threat. Wasn't spectacular but 3 points on the board and that's what's important.

Bamford was trying to get out of the way. You see him start to tell the ref that before the crowd and maybe his teammates convince him otherwise.

Qpr commentator/fans with short memories after revelling in the fact that one of their players blatantly handballed a goal last time we played them. As they say, football has a way of evening things out.

And maybe he should have had the red anyway for intent. Look at the way he comes out of the box and the position of Begovics leg. If Bamford hadn't gotten out of the way that is a dangerously high tackle

I thought that the red card was for arguing with the ref. Bamford the Cheat jumped out of the way.

We were lackluster last night and I'm wondering what Summerville actually brings to the team. His free kicks go too far and he invisible most of the time. If we have a chance to get rid then I would and bring someone else in.

<laugh> You’re on a windup surely. Summerville delivers great corners. Has skill and pace in abundance. Ok he could release the ball earlier but he’s young enough to learn.

Oh and he scored the winning goal last night.

I think Summerville is a handful for the opposition. Every game he's played this season he's been hauled back by the opposition and it happened again last night. They are scared witless of his pace, if he ever got a free run without being fouled he would cause mayhem.

He admitted to diving out of the way, which you can clearly see he is doing.
This is different to diving to win a decision.

The important bit is what the refs report says. Did he send Begovic off because he thought there was contact? If yes then he should have it rescinded on appeal.
If he was sent off for intent then it's a fair cop as it was dangerous.

For me, Paddy didn’t actually dive out of the way. He avoided the challenge then chucked himself to the floor. I think he was expecting a clip and took a split second decision to go down. I’d prefer my striker to stay on his feet and try and score from there.

Do you remember in the Villa game when Bielsa demanded we let them walk the ball into the net. In the melee proceeding that, Bamford hit the floor like he'd been shot and got someone sent off!

‘A horrific night’: Leyton Orient fan dies despite supporters trying to stop match to help him

By Tom Burrows and Philip Buckingham
    Oct 4, 2023

Leyton Orient fan Derek Reynolds died after becoming unwell in the stands at their Brisbane Road stadium on Tuesday — despite supporters trying to halt the League One match against Lincoln City by rushing onto the pitch so the 74-year-old could receive treatment.

In the 82nd minute, one fan approached assistant referee Lee Venamore before another ran on and urged referee Stephen Martin to stop the game, which Orient were winning 1-0.

As the on-site medical team attended to Reynolds, Martin allowed play to continue for around another minute. Around 20 fans from the North Stand, behind one of the goals, then came onto the pitch and sat down in protest, forcing the match to stop.

This lasted for around seven minutes as Reynolds continued to receive medical attention. He was brought down from the East Stand to the side of the pitch to continue CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or chest compressions).

The match was poised to restart when fans had been cleared from the pitch. But Orient manager Richie Wellens and some spectators at the game were shocked when the referee tried to resume play while medics were still performing CPR. Lincoln’s goalkeeper Lukas Jensen refused to continue while the emergency was ongoing.

“It’s horrific,” said Wellens. “We’re on the opposite side of the pitch, and the referee is ready to do a drop ball to restart the game while there’s a fan having CPR, struggling for his life. It’s a sickening feeling.

“I felt sorry for the referee and the fourth official because the rule is to play on but you have to stop the game and make sure the fan is OK.

“It was a horrific night and a horrific moment. The rules are not common sense. The protocol has to be to get help as soon as possible to that area and unfortunately, it’s not.”

The English Football League (EFL) is confident Martin followed the correct protocol for medical emergencies in the stands at matches.

He eventually took the teams off and the decision to abandon the game was eventually taken at 10:25pm, almost an hour after play was stopped.

On Wednesday afternoon, Orient identified the fan as Reynolds, who had managed the east London club’s stadium public-address system in the 1990s.

Leyton Orient Football Club is devastated to confirm that the supporter who was taken ill at Tuesday's game against Lincoln City has sadly passed away.

    Rest in peace, Derek ❤️

    — Leyton Orient FC (@leytonorientfc) October 4, 2023

“Leyton Orient Football Club is devastated to confirm that supporter Derek Reynolds has passed away,” a club statement said. “Despite the best efforts of Derek’s fellow supporters and medical professionals from the club’s on-site paramedics and doctors, Lincoln City and the London Ambulance Service, he sadly lost his life.

“Derek was a life-long O’s supporter and he lived in Osbourne Road, a short walk from the ground, for many years. ”

Wellens and Lincoln manager Mark Kennedy only became aware of an incident in the stands when Reynolds’ fellow fans raised the alarm.

“As soon as supporters start waving their arms and saying something’s wrong, myself and Mark were saying, ‘Stop the game’,” said Wellens. “The fourth official (Carl Brook) was saying, ‘We can’t stop the game, we have to continue’.

“A fan then ran on the pitch, the game then briefly restarted, then supporters started running on the pitch and sat down at the far end. That takes the attention away from what is the most important thing — trying to get help.

“When our supporters came on the pitch, the fourth official was worried about a safety issue. I said, ‘Leave that to me, I’ll get them off the pitch. Concentrate on the referee and trying to get help to our supporter’.

“I went over to our supporters, they were very good and got off the pitch but then, unbelievably, they tried to restart the game.”

Warren Gordon, an Orient season-ticket holder, was at the match with his wife and two boys.

He said: “Where the incident took place is almost exactly in line with us to the right (in the North Stand). I could see a steward moving up and down, as though he was doing chest compressions.

“I started screaming over, ‘Defibrillator! Defibrillator! Get it over there!’. My wife has had a heart attack, so I knew what was needed. I was screaming for the paramedics to get over there. It felt like an eon but it was probably a minute or two before I saw some activity.

“The first-aiders had to walk from where the dugout is, down the right side of the pitch, to the North Stand where we were and then in front of our stand to where the person was. You’re talking a good two minutes, two and a half minutes, maybe three between me screaming and them getting there.

“By that point, there were loads of stewards there but the game was still going on.”

A fan from the East Stand then ran on to alert the referee. He was ejected by stewards.

A minute later, Gordon was among around 20 other supporters who entered the pitch.

He said: “We can see that the guy needs medical attention and will probably need to bring him down onto the pitch to assist him. Doing chest compressions on a seat in the stands just isn’t ideal. You can’t really help because of how little space you’ve got.

“We’re getting more incensed, more panicked. Can you really play on as though nothing is going on when you’ve got children there and it might be someone they know getting treatment? Something triggered with me and I just thought, ‘No, I’ve had enough’.

“I’m (sitting) two rows from the front, so I climbed over the barrier and calmly walked onto the pitch, where I sat down. At which point I turned behind and there were about 20 people with me. In my head, I thought I might lose my season ticket or get a ban but sometimes you have to make a stand. It was at that point Richie Wellens came on the pitch telling us to get off.

“You can’t continue a game of football if someone is in the crowd receiving first aid in that situation.”

Another Orient fan, Daniel Flewers, watched the incident unfold from the South Stand.

He said: “There were about 10 minutes of the game left when a fan in the East Stand got on the pitch and initially approached the linesman. He got taken out by stewards from the ground. There was another fan that then came on the pitch and came up to the referee and asked for the game to be stopped.

“The game carried on for another minute, then more of our fans came on the pitch by the North Stand to make sure it couldn’t continue.

“The referee stopped the game and medical people entered the East Stand and they started clearing the area out. The man ended up on the floor by the pitch, then they started giving him CPR.

“What was really baffling was (that) the referee then tried to restart the game. Everyone was screaming at the referee — players from both teams, in particular the Lincoln goalkeeper.

please log in to view this image

“The medical team continued to work on the man until about 10:25pm.

“The stadium then announced the game wouldn’t continue and the fans could leave. It was a very long time, around 30-40 minutes, for everybody sitting there, watching and waiting after the players had been taken off.

“There were a lot of kids who were very distressed. The match should really have been abandoned earlier, so people could have left the paramedics to do their job.”

The EFL says match officials, unless unavoidable, should consult with the stadium safety officer via the fourth official before making any decision to suspend play.

In the event of a medical emergency, clubs are advised to alert the nearest steward, who will ensure the crowd medical team is notified and that the appropriate care is provided. There may be situations where there is a need for the match to be halted. That decision is taken between the crowd medical team, the ground safety team/operations team and the referee. It is at that point the fans are told and the league is informed.
Orient thanked supporters “for the way in which they conducted themselves on Tuesday night and acted to try and help the situation”.

A statement from the EFL said a decision would be made on whether the game will be replayed, or if the result at the time of the abandonment will stand, after consultation with both clubs.

Last month, Scunthorpe United and Buxton were ordered to replay their fixture in the National League North, the sixth tier of English football, which was abandoned in the 96th minute because of a torrential downpour. Buxton had been leading 2-1 and won the replayed game 3-0.

Orient will pay tribute to Reynolds on Saturday at their home fixture against Reading, and his family have been invited to the game as guests of the club.

The club added: “If you were in attendance at Brisbane Road on Tuesday evening and were affected by the events, you can contact the helpline at MIND for support on (+44) 0300 123 3393.”

    Quick question.

How have the Scottish pub league teams been doing in Europe this season? Is there a way to find out how many they have collectively won lost and drawn with goal difference without going through every result on BBC?

I think they've lost every game.
