The first season sires did well at Goodwood, then, with wins in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes (Phoenix of Spain) and the Group 3 Molecomb (Blue Point).
Sunday Series day at Haydock Park, yesterday, was another good 'un for the first season sires. The Calyx colt, Nellie Laylax, won the valuable £30,000 Nursery and what about the Blue Point filly, Forever Blue. Cor blimey that was some debut (won by 3.75 lengths and the front pair another 12 lengths clear of the 3rd) and this one looks an animal of huge potential, methinks. Curious breeding as well re this Forever Blue. Her sire was, of course, a sprinting star, but her dam won the Lingfield Oaks Trial. Don't know what her trip will ultimately be but as I say Forever Blue looks some filly moving forward...

Can't remember how to interpret those stats Blue Point, for example. Is that 76 different horses of which 30 of them have won at least one race. If so, of those 30, how many runs and wins and how many runs from those without a win? Is the raw data accessible? I wouldn't mind doing some analyses from it
The figures I put up are simply number of individual runners and winners. I pull the numbers from Racing Post Statistics. You need to set the filter to European Stats and European First Crop Sires https://www.racingpost.com/statistics/european
A spurt from the front by Blue Point: every second 2yo winner seems to be by Blue Point. IN GB/Ire:- Blue Point 35 races won by 27 horses from 72 runners (199 runs) Soldiers Call 25 races won by 20 horses from 60 runners (197 runs) Inns of Court 17 races won by 13 horses from 53 runners (166 runs) in Europe: Blue Point 40 by 32 from 81 Soldiers Call 27 by 22 from 63 Inns of Court 24 by 19 from 70 As usual France is a different story City Light 10 by 8 from 23 Blue Point 6 by 5 from 11 Ten Sovereigns 4 from 3 from 11 Never fails to astound me how few 2yo races are run in France. I do feel these First Season Sires have had it easy as Kodiac (69 runners in GB/Ire this year) is on the wane and Mehmas has had only 42 runners this year. It will be oh so different next year as Mehmas covered something like 240 mares..

The wins to runs ratio for Blue Point, Too Darn Hot and Study of Man are noteworthy and with Study of Man the cheaper of the three (£12,500 v £40,000 TDH and €35,000 BP) he definitely looks the value right now. Kirsten Rausing (who stands Study of Man) confirmed in a recent interview that Study of Man will be on Alpinista's dance card at some point in the future - she is in foal to Dubawi on a February cover and is likely to go back to him again next year.
Just had another group winner and the going at this time of year should suit his produce. Still concerns me. One why did he only have a ~60% fertility figure? Two, why have only 40% of his live foals run? Three, what was it about him that caused him to run so few races? I think 2 and 3 are because the moving parts are not suited to ground that hasn't got the word soft in it. He had few runners on the firm ground of the short dry summer we had. Not sure how he did on fertility with his 2nd and 3rd crops.
He's definitely got issues - his 93 mares in 2021 resulted in 54 foals. He covered 83 mares in 2022 so we'll see in the next month or so how many foals that produced once the 2023 Returns are out. Those are low books by Coolmore standards - his roster-mate Ten Sovereigns covered 132 and 173 in 2021 and 2022 respectively.
Well Calyx seems to have got his issues under control as he covered 202 mares in 2023! That said, he's only got 38 reported foals on the ground this year, though registrations are likely to still come in until the end of the year. His revised number of mares covered in 2022 stands at 66 as they have stripped out those that were double covered by other stallions and who produced foals to those other horses.
