It's not even October yet Newcastle are unbeaten in the champions league and if they beat Sheffield United and Burnley they'll be right up there in the top 6 probably. The recruitment has given Newcastle depth and when we get injuries it will make sense. Newcastle have laid the foundations to start kicking on in the future windows... it's really not just about this season.
Think too many people (not necessarily on this forum) but the champions league trans are the best of the best and it’s like playing the “big 6” every game. So to go away and grab a point is fantastic
13 points is guaranteed a place in the knockout stages. 11-12 points is almost (but not quite) always going to be in the knockouts. 10 points will usually get you there. 8-9 points, and you're looking at the results of the other games in your group and sweating. 6-7, you might make it through, but more likely than not are clearing your calendar for Thursday nights. 5 points, and you're bit less than an even shot to make Europa. No team on 5 or fewer points has made the knockouts in the modern format. 3-4 means you can probably focus on your league standings and dream of next year. Nicked off Reddit but a rough idea of how many points are needed to make it through the group stage. 1/6 points to get in to the Europa on the board. We need a win and 2 draws from the 5 remaining and the European adventure probably continues in some form.
Seeing as Milan are crying about luck I think Newcastle should buy the cb they've got he's very good.
I agree I felt Newcastle could win at full strength I wasn't overly worried despite a spell in the 1st half. Milan created few shots mostly from range and they missed the two bog chances they had. Longstaff had the best chance of the game.
2 years ago under Bruce we were getting those kind of stats in 0-0 draw at home to Leeds and being told to accept it and be realistic. Now it's at the San Siro in the Champions League, I'm not saying people shouldn't complain but I am amazed at the levels of negativity. We are 4th favourites in the group and could easily be thumped away to Milan and home to PSG and be almost out after 2 games. Beat Dortmund and Milan at home and hope we do as well against PSG as the other do and we'll still be in Europe in February.
Transfer policy was odd but there's positives there. Instead of buying people to improve the first team right now they spend big on players for years to come. To me that says they're more concerned about consistently challenging top 4 and beyond rather than putting all their eggs into this seasons basket.
I don't know who some of our lot think we were playing last night. The stats don't read well but Newcastle were at times in some form of control they just didn't get it right in the final 3rd. I think people need to accept Newcastle are not on the same level as the biggest clubs in the world but are actually closer than we thought possible not long ago. Newcastle finished 4th once it was an over achievement.... simple as that.
I thought who ever it was was being very dramatic, about 85th min he started on about how if Eddie didn't sub him off he would cost us the game (from upfront?) and then literally 30 seconds later his number went up, it was like he'd just won after 9 rounds with Mike Tyson - very bizzare.
We are back to "magic wand" time again. We had a lot of poor players when we were taken over. It takes time to revamp a squad. It's not going to happen overnight. In addition the rest of the playing staff were neglected and forgotten about. We are subject to FFP not just on amounts to spend on players but also in relation to wages and percentage of revenue. These are also being tightened up over the next few years. We are spending for now AND the future. List below of players we have sold or released since the take over. We also haver certain other poor players out on loan eg H******k and Hayden. Everybody will agree we are ahead of schedule in revamping the Club. We all agree that all we want is a Club that tries. But we still have some posters who seem to think the playing squad can be changed over night and are upset that we didn't do better when drawing away to last season's C L semi finalists. Also, some are upset that certain players are still getting a game even if we did get a draw away to last season's semi finalists. We would all like to have the world's best player playing in each position but it takes time. Even so, the best team in the world is not necessarily made up of the best player in each position. It's a team game. Some times a player who might not be the best brings something else to the table which merits his being picked. We dont know as we aren't on the inside. Teams don't play their best football 100% of the time. We are only 5 games into this season. For me it really beggars belief the inability of some on here to realise where we were, consider how far we have come in such a short space of time and acknowledge that the Management Team and the players are all giving it their best effort and that no magic wand actually exists. It takes time. Yes, things can be improved and I have no doubt they will. Yes, mistakes have and are being made and will also continue to be made but so what? So long as we as a Club continue to try then I am happy and I will enjoy the ride. That's all I ever wanted. I don't agree with this! The fans always wanted the team to win and the club to be relevant. This notion was merely a defence put in place to deal with attacks suggesting Newcastle fans were delusional and had expectations above the clubs station. I think it's true and not just at Newcastle.. fans want to compete more and are too afraid to say it and own it.... apart from the odd DPP. Even the concept of time being used suggests the folk saying they meant it are being dishonest because the clubs trying now so why does it matter what happens in 10 years ? They're basically expecting more so obviously just trying isn't enough.
Sorry Trev, my screen starred out one of the words for some really bizarre reason. Was that meant to be HENDRICK?
Anyway I think some need a good humbling because clearly the Robson out brigade are still alive and kicking. It's going to be out in the group stages and then a number of years before Newcastle qualify again, so people should be enjoying it. It's not even guaranteed Newcastle will qualify ever again tbh.
Adversely, I don't understand the above! Has it BEEN excellent progress? Yep. Are we doing well enough this season? Nope. Was the transfer window good? Nope. Just to be clear, a year ago the club's owner said we'd win the league within five years. One year in, excellent progress (again), but the signs this season aren't encouraging. All I'm doing is checking expected progress towards being league winners against getting a lucky draw vs Brentford, screwing up vs Liverpool and not laying a glove on Brighton, City and AC Milan. The club is trying, but as Munse rightly says that whole mantra was the balance against idiots like Ferdinand defending Ashley. Now we're trying, but in the past few months are getting a few things wrong (in my opinion). Healthy debate is good but let's stop keep calling people delusional or stupid because views differ.
I thought they said 5 to 10 years and let's not forget about a week later the bald ponce Levy rallied and succeeded in getting a vote to change sponsorship rules. I have to say I'm looking at the manager when seeing the likes of Murphy Longstaff and Burn playing regularly. The signings of Gordon and Barnes are questionable could they have got two better players one left and one right for 80 million ? Probably, but it's too soon to judge mate. Let's just try to enjoy the journey mate and you're fine having strong views.
He was gash last night I'm not saying he's a bad player I judt think they could have got two better players right and left with 90 million.
