Yeah but misplacing a pass just outside the opposition's box really shouldn't lead to a situation that looked like a goal the second it was played. It felt like we were playing a 1-8-1 formation last night our defensive positioning was just so inept. I mean, you're right, but still....
The Ipswich game is red button on Sky I think. Oh bugger. And my brother is coming round, who is an Ipswich fan...
Yeah some of our positioning is genuinely school boy level. I know we were chasing the game but at this level how do you end up with 3 v 1 against the keeper from your own possession. Shocking stuff.
I was having a think last night about what team has conceded the most goals while achieving promotion. My guesstimate of recent times is Blackpool under Holloway so looked it up and they conceded 58 the year they went up which is less than I thought at just over a goal a game. We're currently on track to concede over a hundred
Let's hope so or things will get toxic. Especially if we defend like an U10 team again. Surely Martin has learned we need a DM by now.
Just watched the highlights on Saints site. The lack of effort in trying to get back to defend was feeble. This is a continuation of the last two seasons. A lack of passion in Saints players is a basic weakness.
Just watched this again and it's even worse than I remembered. Smallbone shouldn't have committed himself but even so I'm struggling to recall seeing 3 players through on goal like that so early in a match before.
Wasn't going to bother commenting but I have seen so many people having a go or moaning about players... it is not the players fault. Yes there were stupid mistakes, but these are being made because of the way Martin sets the team up. This is how he played at Swansea and we are getting similar outcomes to Swansea in terms of not being able to defend. If Martin refuses to change or adapt his philosophy, we are ****ed. There is an element of the players needing to time to adapt to the system, but we need Martin to be willing to adapt too. Its a long season and hopefully Martin wakes up at some point and accepts reality that you cant play like he wants unless you can spend £150m on the defence to do it.
The last two games are so bad for a number of reasons. The main one being conceding in the first minute in both games. I mean, doing that in back to back games is unheard of. Although not unsurprising when I looked at how we lined up for kick off with KWP in midfield. Yes KWP was **** last night but I do think he's been unsettled by Martin's use of him. He is a quality right back so play him as a RB for ****s sake. He was a lot better 2nd half when he was out on the right getting up and down the line. Enough of this Pep style use a full back in midfield bollocks.
