Just seen a report that says tougher French policing is the reason for a current downtrend, with the smugglers being forced further along the coast. Of course it's a long coastline so as you say , whilst the police are busy catching in one spot, others will have the opportunity to proceed

On radio phone-ins, etc, I keep hearing people shouting 'I agree with Rishi, we should stop the boats and stop wasting all this money on these costly schemes.'

Sorry but it's the government who aren't stopping the boats and who are wasting all this money ...

... you can't have your cake and eat it.

They've had thirteen years to make things better, but they're worse.

It's obviously the weak opposition to blame ...

... if they voted against the government, more carefully, life could be so much better.

They are the Frank Spencer of politics. Making schoolboy errors then making things 100 times worse with their inept attempts to "fix" things. Beyond parody. raw-1366639851.jpg

    It's politics by shouting.

Patel threatened to send in the Royal Navy gunboats, Braverman threatened to send people to Rwanda and Sunak threatened to destroy the gangs ...

... it's just endless foot stamping rhetoric and no action.

When it fails just make excuses and blame the French.

Aye mainly down to the additional £760m equal pay bill from a court ruling in 2012, the same year that Labour gained overall control. The council has already paid out over £1bn since then...I reckon most would go bust if faced with that no matter who was the controlling party.

I'd say that the council has known about this for a while and should have probably been budgeting for it but with years of funding cuts from the government thats probably not been possible

I'd normally agree with you, but if 'been in charge for over a decade therefore no excuse' is good for one side, it's good for the other. They've had eleven years to sort it out...

Yes you'd think 10/13 years would be long enough to make some kind of progress ...

... perhaps if they're elected for another term eh?

They're not the first council this happened to, can't recall the others but it's happened for sure. There'll probably be more if they have to fork out to replace all these crumbling schools.

Yeah I get what you mean, it’s about £150m a year though so anyone would struggle with that.

Absolutely no doubt it could have been managed better…I mean how much did the olympics cost to the council. Conversely how much did they make and where did it go?

    Just googled it.

    20th March 2023
"Tory-run Croydon Council issued its third bankruptcy notice in two years in November and earlier this month signed off a record 15 per cent council tax rise in a bid to smooth out its finances.

The special measures move clears the way for central government to write off more than £500million of loans the local authority has racked up and cannot pay back."

What with Council's going bankrupt, rampant inflation, utility bills through the roof, strikes left right and centre, sewage in the rivers and seas, illegal immigration skyrocketing, and schools threatening to collapse on top of children, I am starting to have my doubts as to whether it really could have been "worse under Jeremy Corbyn" <confused>

We don't know that though........because they'd still be in the first COVID meeting. Nobody daring to make a decision for The Leader, and The Leader desperately hoping someone will make the decision for him.
