Goalkeeper hanged himself in shame after fiancee 'had affair with John Terry's brother' A professional footballer killed himself over the 'embarrassment' of his fiancee having an affair with the brother of England captain John Terry, an inquest heard today. Dale Roberts, a goalkeeper with Rushden & Diamonds and England C, hanged himself last December at the home he shared with partner Lindsey Cowan in Higham Ferrers, Northamptonshire. The inquest heard how Miss Cowan and Mr Roberts split up briefly after she had an affair with Paul Terry, 32, brother of John, in May 2010. Mr Roberts had become withdrawn after an injury and began taking anti-depressants which left him 'lethargic' and 'lacking motivation'. The day the 24-year-old was due to make his comeback for Rushden & Diamonds, he sent a text to his fiancee saying: 'I'm so scared about playing tonight'. Northamptonshire coroner Anne Pember recorded a verdict of suicide and the cause of death as asphyxia caused by hanging. Manchester City winger and England star Adam Johnson, a schoolfriend of Mr Roberts, said the pair had gone on holiday together shortly after the affair became public. He said: 'I'm not sure he could deal with the embarrassment the story caused him. His death was a combination of the negative press and his leg injury. 'This was a very sad and tragic conclusion to the life of a wonderful young man who was a dear friend and he had a great future in the game and my heart goes out to his family.' Rushden and Diamonds club doctor Dr John Mellor told the inquest Mr Roberts came to him for help on November 19, 2010 and he prescribed him anti-depressants. He saw him several weeks later and he was 'smiling' and 'training as normal', said Dr Mellor. Mr Roberts's mother Isabelle revealed that Miss Cowan and her son had been at school together in Peterlee and had been in a relationship for the past six years. She said he was 'really upset' after reports of his fiancee's affair with Terry made the newspapers. 'He phoned us and said Lindsey had been having an affair with Paul Terry and gave strict instructions not to speak to the press. 'He was really upset because he gave him his couch and trusted him.' In September Mr Roberts became depressed after picking up a leg injury while playing for England C and began missing training at Rushden & Diamonds. His mother added: 'I found him down and depressed, he had been missing training and not turning up at the club. 'He had began suffering panic attacks and said he couldn't go to Asda. 'I believe it was because he thought people recognised him and was worried about what people would say.' Miss Cowan, 26, told the hearing that Paul Terry stayed at their house 'from time to time' but that after they got back together they were able to laugh and joke about it. Shortly before his death he was avoiding training and his team-mates, she added. She said: 'He began crying, he said he couldn't go to training because he couldn't be bothered anymore. 'He kept saying over and over "my body can't take it" and was very lethargic and wanted to sleep. 'Dale told him [his agent Cyrille Regis] Justin [Edinburgh, his manager] had shouted at him and said, "if you were my son I would kick you up the backside". Dale said he asked for a counsellor but did not get one.' He received a text message the night before he died from Mr Edinburgh telling him he was to start the game the following day. The next morning he sent her a text message saying that he was scared. His body was found 3.30pm after police were told he had not attended pre-match training an hour and a half before. He had written: 'I love Lindsey Elizabeth Cowan very very much she is the love of my life.' Mr Edinburgh told the inquest his player 'had no motivation'. He said: 'He was quite distant. Dale wasn't the greatest communicator off the pitch. He was such a nice lad, I wish I could have done more to have stopped this.' Mr Roberts's mother stormed out of the inquest as the manager gave his evidence. Club physio Harry Bedford told the inquest Mr Roberts had suffered palpitations and had ostracised himself from other players shortly before his death. Coroner Anne Pember said: 'From the evidence I believe at the time when he was feeling low and depressed he made a decision he no longer wanted to live.' Outside the court a statement was read out, from Mr Roberts's parents, George and Isabelle. It read: 'We wish to thank everyone for their help and support and and kindness over the past year. It's been a difficult time for everyone concerned but the love and support we've been shown has helped us during this difficult time.' Mr Roberts joined Rushden & Diamonds in January 2009 and had loan spells with Eastwood Town and Alfreton Town while on the books at Championship side Nottingham Forest. Forest's chief executive Mark Arthur described Dale as a 'talented' goalkeeper with a 'highly promising career' and said his death was a tragedy. Paul Terry - who was given a free transfer to Darlington after the affair emerged, and now plays for Thurrock - did not attend the inquest. He is married to the Leicester City left-back Paul Konchesky's sister Sarah, and they have two children called Georgia and Frankie. he shouldn't be in the team, not good enough anymore, the Germans will be licking their lips if he plays against them or any other of the top teams in the Euros, plus hes a massive dickhead like his brother is probably
No way fella, Smalling, Jones, Cahill all much better now even Jagielka and Lescott. Get shot of the creep
Well it seems infidelity runs in the family, shame the innocent guy in all this felt the need to claim his own life, trouble is with family's like the terrys they harbor no guilt and have no morals
I'm an Arsenal fan and can't stand Terry, Cole, Drogba, seems like a lot of their players are just vile, makes hating them easier!
I know, they're obsessed with him, even Capello buys it and changes the captaincy every 5 minutes... Terry is more committed to England than any other player and the whole 'hating' him thing is just based on all this soap opear media bollocks surrounding him. He's a good defender just like Ashley Cole. There's much ****ier players out there. One example is Luis Suarez, great player but can't go a game without cheating in a hundred different ways. Terry plays the game the right way and there's precious few players left who do. You have to think if he played for any other country he'd be a national hero.
Terrys one of those people who's above everyone else and I ****ing hate him. I'd love to cave his head in and tie him to a chair and cut off bits and bobs like toes, fingers etc... But there isn't a better English center back around at the minute, apart from James Chester.
I'd just like to point out that the affair was quite some time before he killed himself. In fact he and his missus had made up. He'd injured his leg and hadn't been playing a while, was suffering from depression, which he was receiving treatment for, but that is what made him take his life, not the affair. So, sorry, I realise you're enjoying your little rants about one of the Terry's, and its nice to form a mob with pitchforks to run JT out of the country, even though this was nothing to do with him, but honestly, stop jumping to ****ing conclusions all the time, its embarrassing. JT is a footballer. He's not committed any crimes. It takes 2 to tango. If his wife is stupid enough to forgive him, good luck to them both, they'll need it. Football is a manly, testosterone driven sport and always has been. My Uncle Michael used to pick players up from Boothferry, drop them at their girlfriends, wait for them, then take them home to their wives. Some of those were really big heroes of some of you too...The point is, because you get to know every detail about their lives nowadays, you think you're entitled to know it all, and think you're qualified to pass judgement on them. You're not. This guy died because of a real problem and illness called depression, you'd do better putting all your tabloid induced fury and energy into helping people that suffer with that.
If the Terry family weren't as famous they'd probably be on Jeremy Kyle! It's sad about the guy who took his own life, having known someone who has taken their own life it's a difficult thing to go through for those left behind.
Terry used to be one of our best players, he isn't anymore. It's time to ship out the old guard like him and Rio, I'd add Lampard to that list and Gerrard. We've never achieved anything with these players so why should that change now when all of them are past their best?
This is a quality post. It's embarrassing how many top England players are seen as scum by fans just because the girly magazines tell us not to like them. These people then say he's not good enough any more just because the tabloid numpties say so, ironically the only reason the media are so interested is because they are very good players. The other week when Chelsea lost to Arsenal 5-3, Chelsea conceded a goal late on when an appalling pass aimed at Terry went straight past him to the onrushing Van Persie, Terry slipped on his arse trying to catch it and Arsenal scored. All the cameras zoomed in on Terry and everyone blamed him. He did nothing wrong. I bet everyone on here knows the incident I'm talking about, and yet most won't know who played the pass that actually was at fault. Obviously thats because these people don't care about a foreign Chelsea player messing up, they want to moan about an England one instead. Btw, it was Malouda.
By that criteria nearly every England player ever is/was ****. Yes they might not be at their best any more but you have to say when watching MOTD, who's a better midfielder in the Lampard mould than him? He's unplayable at times. Same goes for Gerrard at Liverpool when fit. Ferdinand I might actually agree with you on because he is being gradually replaced by the younger lads at Man U, but Terry is still by far the best CB we have and probablyone of the best 2 or 3 in the PL. Who's better? Vidic maybe.
