    I’m guessing that when a player carrying an injury has a medical, extra tests are carried out to assess both the prognosis, and whether it’s masking any underlying conditions.

    I suspect that the actual deal was done much earlier, I am guessing that Ross travelled back to Newcastle with the squad, in the Saint's chariot (G-ISLM ATR 72 Blue Island) around 4 p.m. There may have been some i's to cross and t's to dot which may have delayed the final announcement, but it was probably a deal with Skysports to keep up the interest?
