No, just more incompetence from Simon Hooper and the VAR, Michael Salisbury. Salisbury was briefly suspended last season for a similar failure to question a wrong penalty decision in the game between Spurs and Brighton.
Looks like both of them have been stood down for the next round of fixtures, and Wolves received an apology from the ref chief. I think they need to reduce the high bar they set for a "clear and obvious" error for VAR to intervene. If that had been given there's no way VAR overturns it.
It's ironic that the referee who, seven years ago, disallowed a Cameron Jerome goal for dangerous play involving a high foot but no contact, apparently saw nothing dangerous in Onana's late, high speed, full body take out of Wolves's Kalajdzic. In the years since that first incident, the rules about endangering an opponent are supposed to have been tightened, not relaxed. As well as the apology Wolves have received from PGMOL's Jon Moss, Howard Webb has now stated unequivocally that a penalty should have been given. He's the former top referee tasked with raising the standard of officiating so that this sort of crass error doesn't happen.
Not massively surprised. Have a few friends who are Ipswich fans and they genuinely say things have improved massively under Kieran McKenna and the whole atmosphere round the club is completely different. Wouldn't be surprised to see them there or thereabouts at the end of the season but we'll see.
I think it is hard to measure just how good they are at this level. 3 wins is a great start, no doubt but you also have to question the standard of the opposition. Sunderland don't seem to be firing properly yet, Stoke City are no great threat, and QPR are QPR and prone to self-destruction or just not able to score goals. Once they have a better test, then maybe I will change my mind
