    AESOPS FABLES 40/1 York 3:35
Has very limited mileage on the clock and some pretty smart form in it too having won the Irish Futurity on second start. A three length third to Shaquille in the Carnarvon last time out doesnt read too badly considering what that one has done since. Been given a break since and on his limited starts he does seem like an animal who goes pretty well fresh. Given connections the price does take some believing and I would be surprised if he doesnt go off a fair bit shorter.

Can't oppose Quickthorn on this ground and course. Will lead them a merry dance

For those of you that love a fairytale ending, Paul Hanagan retires today and has his last ride on WOOTUNSUN in the first at York.

Yes indeed, that would be a 'fairytale ending'. Really hope Richard Fahey's horse can do it for Paul. <ok>

A couple at York, well-fancied and should run well:

    14:25 - Coltrane
Oisin Murphy on board for the Andrew Balding stable.
3/1 (Wm.Hill/BetUK) best price at time of writing.
    ....................
    15:35 - Bradsell
Hollie Doyle rides for the Archie Watson yard.
5/1 (Wm:Hill/Unibet) best price at time of writing.
    ....................

    Plus E/W Double

I expect to be hearing from ‘the lads’ at Hughie Morrison’s yard because I find myself agreeing with Ron: with no obvious signs of pace except for Quickthorn, he is sure to repeat last year’s tactic – that also worked as well last time at Goodwood. I do not think the margin of victory will be so great as the others will surely not allow him to slip the field today.

In the Nunthorpe, Andrea Atzeni will have been in the sauna for four hours to do the weight on Big Evs but I think that the mare Highfield Princess will show this lot a clean pair of hooves again and probably be chased home by Bradsell, her conqueror at Ascot.

It looks like a ‘no bet’ day as I cannot make my mind up in the Gimcrack. Leading contender Kylian makes his first start over six, whilst Johannes Brahms won on debut over six (but that looks a bad race) but was second over five at Ascot and Haatem is penalised for winning the Vintage over seven on easy ground at Goodwood. This might perhaps be a good opportunity to gamble on the once-raced King’s Gamble, pitched straight into pattern company after that easy win (note: the beaten 1/3 favourite that day Lake Forest re-opposes)...

Good luck anyone punting today and good luck to Paul Hanagan – will he be a kept man now with his missus working for ITV Racing? <laugh>

Doubt it unless he's turned into Paul Mulrennan

Way to go Coltrane, a brave performance and a deserved success! Very well ridden by Oisin Murphy. <applause>

I thought he only needed to repeat last year's performance and they wouldn't be able to keep up. Don't know the sectionals but he didn't get far enough in front. The overall time was actually slightly faster than last year's and they were able to keep in touch. Maybe Quickthorn would have done better on softer ground. He beat all those in front of him at Goodwood on GS (except River of Stars who wasn't in that race

Could be stick. Didn't affect the others though. That was a turn round of 19l and 27l with Coltrane from last year's race and Goodwood respectively

Backed down to 22/1 but couldn't cope with that speed. Not sure where she goes now. She's not an out and out sprinter and not a miler. 6F on a soft surface might suit

BUT what a fantastic win for the connections. Trainer talking about raising the money to get her to the Breeders Cup, and back. Owners in tears. Great to see

Never heard of the young jockey who won the Nunthorpe, nor the trainer for that matter. What an Aussie-type boilover. Incredible! <yikes>

You will, young Irish lad from Dublin who rode tricycles instead of horses as a kid. Northern circuit rider. He would put Harry Davies to shame if given more ammo.

Yes he looked very tidy. Now in the difficult phase of his career with no allowance.

I thought it was funny that he was the tallest person on the winning podium.
