I've been fortunate to have travelled all over the world and Japan is the only place I've been where rather than visiting another country, you feel like you're visiting another planet (though my visits have all been limited to Tokyo, so I maybe shouldn't assume all of Japan is the same).
My understanding is that Tokyo is the more westernised part of Japan! That’s the only place I’ve been too. I loved it - it was like London with all the ****ers removed.
I didn't really think it was westernised, at least not like somewhere like Hong Kong is, it's still very Japanese. I loved it as well, even if some of it was batshit crazy.
My sister moved to Tokyo around twenty years ago and as I spent a lot of time in Hong Kong, I thought it would be great to pop over for the weekend each trip. I had no idea that Hong Kong was a 4 1/2 hour flight from Tokyo, or that Narita Airport is ****ing miles away from Tokyo (it takes an hour to get there even on the super efficient express train). Turned out to be far more effort than I expected, but it was worth it. We ended up alternating trips, I’d go to Tokyo one trip and she’d come to Hong Kong for the next one. Seems like a lifetime ago now.
I just googled this out of curiosity to see what it is now. Quite alarmed to find that average household income is actually less than the average salary. When I made this comment I had just thought it was average salary x2. So it’s incorrect and we are above it. I suppose the average income is affected by plenty of single adult and retired households.
Not really a recommendation but everyone I've known who's been to Japan, and there's quite a few, have said it's fantastic. My bro spent a year in Nagoya and struggled to leave. So just go!
Don’t think he was, didn’t even get the red carpet out for me. Probably laughed and called me a **** whilst sticking my fare in a slot machine.
Kyoto is meant to be more rural and hipster, that’s according to my Grandma anyway. Will likely see both anyway as planning quite an extended trip out there…
same here although i'm just banking it ready for 3 years when my fixed 1.49% deal ends, hopefully will be able to just about pay it off, and then start to save a bit again. Have a decent enough job that gives me the funds for hols, city, saturday night out and gigs etc. A lot of people just waste money on £70 mobile contracts plus all the subscription ****e and takeaways every week then complain they have no money.
