    Competition - Sky Bet Championship
    Venue - Swansea.com Stadium
    Date - 19 August 2023
    Kick off - 3:00pm

Following their disappointing 2-3 defeat away to West Brom at The Hawthorns, next up for Michael Duff’s Swansea squad is a tricky looking home fixture against a Coventry City side hoping to go one better this season and secure promotion back to the top flight of English League football.

Last Saturday, West Brom claimed a first win of the season as they held on for a 3-2 victory in a remarkable game against the Swans.

Semi Ajayi blasted the Baggies into a first-half lead after the Swans had failed to deal with a long throw.

Swans goalkeeper Carl Rushworth then turned the ball into his own net when another Albion set-piece was not cleared after the break, before John Swift's penalty looked to have settled the contest.

But, having produced an abject performance until the final quarter, the Swans then rallied when Harry Darling headed home before Nathan Wood bundled in his first senior goal to set up a grandstand finish.

Ben Cabango came close to scoring a dramatic leveller, but Albion overcame the nerves during nine minutes of stoppage time to secure their first points in 2023-24.

It was the Swans’ first league defeat since mid-March, and the first under Michael Duff as head coach, who surely will have learned several lessons from what he has witnessed last Saturday.

Whilst the Swans were losing at West Brom, Coventry began life without Gustavo Hamer with a convincing win against an out-of-sorts Middlesbrough.

Hamer had joined Sheffield United on the eve of the game but his former side registered their first win of the campaign courtesy of instinctive goals in either half from Matty Godden and club record signing Haji Wright.

Darragh Lenihan's stoppage-time own goal capped a miserable afternoon for Michael Carrick's side who are winless in their last seven Championship games - four of those coming against Coventry who beat them in last season's play-off semi-final.

It's the first time Boro have lost their opening two league games since 2007.

Including the very first meeting between the teams, the Swans have played Coventry on 35 occasions, winning 12, losing 12 and drawing 11.

In the corresponding fixture last season, the teams played out a 0-0 draw:

The ‘infamous’ Robert Madley - well he is to Swans fans - will be the man in the middle when the Swans host Coventry.

The West Yorkshire official - who has a host of Premier League experience under his belt - last took charge of a Swans match in August 2022, a 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in which Ben Cabango was sent off late on.

This will be just the third time Madley has been the referee for a Championship match involving Swansea and, coincidentally, the first was also a trip to the Riverside Stadium. On that occasion in 2011, Nathan Dyer, Scott Sinclair, Ashley Williams and Craig Beattie were on the scoresheet as the Swans left it late to come from behind and win 4-3.

Last season, the man from west Yorkshire took charge of 24 games in all competitions, handing out 96 yellow cards and six reds.

In his two games so far this season he has dished out 13 yellow cards and one red.

Madley will be assisted by Craig Taylor and Greg Read, while Ollie Yates will be the fourth official.

Focussing on Saturday, Duff will undoubtedly make changes and it is highly likely that Charlie Patino - so impressive off the bench at West Brom - will make his first Championship start for the Swans.

One serious consideration for Duff must be whether the team would benefit by adopting a flat back 4 and dispensing with 1 of the 3 Centre Backs.

Whichever system he decides to adopt, the Swans will need to be at the very top of their game if they are to beat the Sky Blues.

    I’m going for a 1-1 draw <cheers>

Thanks Taff. This will be a tough one and I can see the spoils being shared so it's a 1-1 for me

The form book says an away win... plus my pre-season optimism is getting a thumping... so a Swans win <laugh>

What the hell, I'm all in with Duff, at least until he's had a good crack at it. A surprising 2 - 1 home win :emoticon-0175-drunk

Rather optimistically I chalked this down as a 2-0 home win as far as the prediction league goes. I'll stick with it although I don't really believe it <laugh>

I took a trip to Japan whilst I was in the Philippines. My wife and daughter were trying on Kimono’s (as you do) and two guys heard me speaking English. They asked where I was from and and mentioned football. When I said I’m a Swans fan they both were delighted - one guy was from Singapore and the other from South Korea. We had along chat about Ki and how well the Swans did for a while in the PL. They were both big fans of Michu. It’s nice to go around the other side of the world and meet people who’ve even heard of the Swans.

Charlie Patino is handed his first start for Swansea City as Michael Duff makes one change for the visit of Coventry City to the Swansea.com Stadium.

The on-loan Arsenal midfielder comes in for Ollie Cooper after making an impressive debut from the bench against West Bromwich Albion last weekend.

The starting XI is otherwise unchanged from the side that started at The Hawthorns.

Carl Rushworth starts in goal, with Nathan Wood, Ben Cabango and Harry Darling making up the Swansea defence.

Harrison Ashby and Josh Key occupy the wing-back slots with Jay Fulton and captain Matt Grimes - fresh from signing a contract extension - joining Patino in midfield.

Jerry Yates and Joel Piroe lead the line in attack for the Swans, while the visitors have former Swan Joel Latibeaudiere in their starting line-up, with Jake Bidwell among the substitutes.

Swansea City: Carl Rushworth; Harry Darling, Ben Cabango, Nathan Wood; Harrison Ashby, Jay Fulton, Matt Grimes (captain), Charlie Patino, Josh Key; Jerry Yates, Joel Piroe.

Substitutes: Andy Fisher, Joe Allen, Josh Ginnelly, Jamie Paterson, Mykola Kuharevich, Liam Cullen, Kyle Naughton, Ollie Cooper, Azeem Abdulai.

Coventry City: Ben Wilson, Jay Dasilva, Bobby Thomas, Kyle McFadzean (captain), Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Ben Sheaf, Haji Wright, Joel Latibeaudiere, Matty Godden, Milan van Ewijk, Josh Eccles.

Substitutes: Brad Collins, Luis Binks, Liam Kelly, Ellis Simms, Jake Bidwell, Ryan Howley, Bradley Stretton, Justin Obikwu, Kai Andrews.
