The last time the two sides met was eleven years ago. That too was a League Cup encounter at Elland Road, which Leeds ran ot 4-0 winners (Becchio, Varney, Norris and McCormack). Neil Warnock picked a very colourful squad that day with Aidy White, Paul Green and Michael Brown all playing their part. Daniel Farke is set to make wholesale changes to the squad, which was held 2-2 by Cardiff City. In will come Karl Darlow, Lewis Bate, Darko Gyabi, Jamie Shackleton, Joe Gelhardt, Sonny Perkins and Ian Povada. Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas, Tyler Adams, Patrick Bamford, Junior Firpo, Mateo Joseph, Sam Greenwood, Cody Drameh and Georginio Rutter are all ruled out through injury. Matthew Pennington and Nohan Kenneh (on loan from Hibs) could play against their former club.
Jesus! Veg Varney! And some think Bamford is bad! I think we've come a long way since then. Thankfully. Even our makeshift team v Cardiff was world class, compared to some of the teams we've put out in the Championship.
Looking forward to seeing how our bench from Sunday does and hopefully one or two stake a claim for Saturday. Perkins in particular will be getting the Jamster's scouting treatment so hopefully he does well
Can you keep an eye on Gyabi too as i need to see him progress. For his size he should be all over the shrews.
Means we will win on penalties Don't ask me how I got to that equation, I'm still trying to absorb this FFP nonsense
Tell me about it. You know I love to dig deep into stuff like this, and even I'm not confident that I have any sort of real understanding
Perkins won't make it here. Gyabi has the talent to play at a very high level but he is very naive or to put it bluntly a bit thick. If he learns we'll have a really good player but from what I've seen he hasn't progressed.
All the young players get a clean slate at the start of every season as far as I'm concerned. Hopefully they've all been working hard over the summer and during pre season because they will have known that after relegation they would likely get the opportunity at first team level to show what they can do. That said they only get half an hour to impress the Jamster or it's curtains
For me, the only players from the starting line up at the weekend i'd start would be James and Hjelde. James because I 'm not sure he's as important as Sini and Summerville (assuming they stay.) Hjelde because Byram is too injury prone to risk against Shrewsbury and there aren't really any other options. Poveda needs to minutes too, he has to be auditioning for a start against Birmingham.
Bear in mind our youngsters haven't exactly had the best 1st team role models these last couple of years. Unless it's to learn how not to play.
Does anyone care if we go out of the Carabao Cup tomorrow night ? Obviously we're not going to win it so what's the point other than maybe giving some even younger players a run out.
Definite starters for tomorrow; Darlow Monteiro Gyabi Shackleton Bate Poveda Perkins Joffy Any others ?
8 Championship clubs out tonight I think (just 2 all Championship ties tonight). Sunderland out on Pens after just having 2 days rest, the other 5 clubs who played Sunday all play tomorrow so either bad scheduling or Sunderland didn't care?
