And to be fair, she won't be the only one doing absolutely nothing and getting paid for it. She's a Tory and she's you-know- who's biggest fan though, so this is clearly the greatest injustice in history....

I was interested to see the 2 recent tory nominations to stand for parliament at the next election, as some of the current rats desert ship. If we are to have some form of effective opposition to Labour, something even die hard Labour supporters should want, those standing for the tories need to be effective and experienced in my opinion. 2 former backroom operators have been put in, who have plenty of experience in running a government. Part of me wonders why they are bothering, but I hope it is out of a sense of rebuilding the conservative party to something resembling a competent opposition. Whoever else gets the nod to stand will be worth reviewing too. In these 2, on the face of things, they seem to have quite differing approaches to conservatism. A wide range of opinions is always needed and Starmer should take note of that frankly if he wants a strong party in power. The tories are likely to have many less seats of course, making those who occupy them needing to be damn smart. Not a bad start, even if I dont agree with the politics of the pair, if a sense of competent challenge and rigour is what we want from those in opposition. I was also reading about Sunak successors. He is unlikely to survive any election defeat. Somebody like Gillian Keegan impresses me and might be the sort of character Starmer wont be able to trot out his tired cliches against. Personally I think it’s almost concentration camp level. They are human beings whatever their status and putting them on an overcrowded fire risk boat out to sea is sickening for humanity. They need love, fun and warmth like all of us. Not saying it’s an easy problem to solve but I’d rather they spent on them than tax dodging paying for the PM’s California beach house.
And yet concentration camps is where we're inevitably headed if everything else is blocked. I see lawyers successfully blocked several migrants who came over the English Channel on a little dinghy getting on a moored harboured barge because...... they're afraid of water. If that doesn't tell you we're getting the piss taken out of us then there's no hope. I had a life threatening experience at work once, so I'm afraid of working and won't do it any more. Free everything, now.
I don't think they are out at sea PRS, the vessel is berthed and the people can come and go as they please. I have no sympathy with the conservative party but I'm not sure what else they can do to tackle the immediate problem (of their own making). Hotels make the already wealthy owners even more wealthy and if they are spending taxpayers money they should be spending it more effectively. People seeking asylum should have their basic needs catered for. This system meets those needs by providing food, shelter, medical assistance, legal advice, clothing and freedom of access/egress.
My experience is the use of ‘hotels’ implies they’re living like kings but they’re really not. They pick under used places, under used for a reason in all circumstances I’ve known, I’m sure there are exceptions. They don’t let them stay because the dehumanising narrative against migrants started by the far right and adopted by mainstream political parties makes people scared. If this boat is a safe place to be I’m not sure why the government are pretending it’s part of their ‘harsh regime’ and the fire service are saying it’s a risk, but maybe it’s all hateful bluff and you’re right.
From what I have read the hotels are a disgrace with 10+ to a room sharing toilets and showers etc. And all the while the wealthy owners/corporations are charging the taxpayer millions. The Hulks are not ideal, but at the very least, they provide all the needs of people when they are at the most vulnerable and at much smaller cost to the taxpayer. The biggest issue, for me, is the time it takes to process applications due to the lack of staff. Austerity at it’s finest

My biggest worry is Labour say they will use the barges as a short term solution, if I remember right I think the government said they would use prefab housing as a short term solution after the war, They haven’t knocked the last ones down yet.
Not sure there is an answer to people migration, whether it is because of, wars famine, poverty or climate change. Can't see many western countries pulling the drawbridge up, as it practically, legally and politically difficult. Presumably, the migrants own country needs improving... ie foreign aid...? To remove incentives to migrate.
I doubt there's anyone who'd disagree with you but that's the problem, not the solution ... ... after thirteen years of this government we still don't have a glimmer of one. All we have are three word slogans like 'stop the boats' or 'seal our borders'. My three word slogan would be 'get it sorted'.

They're handling this all wrong and blaming the lawyers, the Church, the Fire Brigade and anyone else who dares to voice concerns or criticism ... ... we had Patel wanting to send the Royal Navy in which is totally impossible. And some suggestions have been even worse, like putting up advertising boards in Albania ffs
