Okay you lot and especially Kiwi, tone this down...otherwise its closed. I understand the joke deleted was very unpleasant. I also I find the McCann joke unpleasant and so deleting that..as someone said...joking about a child who was most likely taken by sexual deviant ****phile ..is not a joking matter...Just think what the parents are now living with. So last warning Kiwi...and anyone else who wants to put up that sort of humour I don't moderate this thread as I agree that comedy used correctly can often hit home harder than reasoned argument. But I will
Isn't this Cancel Culture at work, Beth? I only saw the McCann joke, which is a rather cruel quip at whether the little girl's parents were irresponsible in leaving her unattended in an unlocked room. Cruel because, even if true, they have had to pay such a price for their mistake. But it's not hate speech and is perfectly legal. It's the kind of joke that Jimmy Carr would have told on the Channel 4 programme 8 out of 10 Cats. I understand that your role is to ensure respect in maintained between posters, but are you really going to extend your power to deleting perfectly legal posts of which you disapprove?
The rape joke seems to have been taken down by a supermod not me Goldie. Obviously that was cancel culture too... Complain to him about that one. I do not usually bother with this thread, because I find a lot of the jokes...a bit nasty...but let them go. This thread is 770 pages long. That is the second joke I have taken down... so please don't accuse me of cancel culture... a lot is let go on here...
As I say, I didn't read the rape joke, Beth, but I can see why mod or supermod would be concerned about anything that addressed serious sexual violence against women. That could be illegal and site managers won't want to run a risk. It would be irresponsible of me to comment further having not seen it. The McCann joke is simply bad taste. Some won't like it and they can express this freely as RTID did. That's how free speech works - it's a privilege we have it in this country, that sadly is not replicated in others with restrictive governing regimes.
For the record, I did indeed challenge Kiwi about the McCann 'joke' but did not report it to the Mods as I was happy to dialogue over its suitability. However, when I postulated that there were lines that dark humour would not cross, Kiwi chose to post a 'joke' about rape which I did report. I'm not in favour of cancel vulture either but taboo subjects in humour are just that for a reason and should remain so.
So rape jokes are not allowed but jokes about taking a beautiful child, ( and yes here is a nonlogical jump, I admit...but looking at the "person of interest", I am making it) who is then sexually assault and killed...and the body is never ( yet) found...is more palatable. Yes we have different sensitivities...but no ..I do not like jokes about child abduction and murder
Yes, free speech is precious and must be protected wherever possible, but it is not unconditional under the law and hate speech or stuff that is grossly offensive for example would be unlawful and not protected.
As I say, Beth, the joke is about the parents' conduct leading up to the abduction. Some are still critical of them. Personally, I think that's hard, but maybe other parents will have gained from an absolutely terrible lesson learned.
Yes I realise, that Goldie and I am not really sure we are very far apart with our views...other than I have to act on things and you don't.. The warning to Kiwi is much more global than just the McCann post
Please do not try and pass responsibility for your actions on to me. You had a choice about what you posted. As to passing your jokes by me, I suggest you merely ask yourself whether they transcend the bounds of common decency instead. I won't comment further.
