Fact. While forwards like Scott Sinclair, Nathan Dyer, and big transfer signing Danny Graham garner a lot of the attention, goalie Michel Vorm is the one player that is vital to Swanseaâs continued success. The âSuper Swansâ have gained a reputation for being one of the better passing teams in the league, but it is still the man between the sticks that allows the rest of the squad to play with more confidence up the pitch. To this point in the season, Vorm has forty-one saves with a save rate of 73%, which is second in the league. Ultimately, there are many reasons why Swansea City have played well to begin this season. However, the shot stopping ability of Michel Vorm is chief among them. Fiction. While Michel Vorm has been brilliant in front of goal except for his own mistake against Arsenal, the Dutch number two goalkeeper is not Swanseaâs most important player. That honor goes to Leon Britton, the 5ft 5in Swansea midfielder who is the engine of this side. Most attacks go through Britton, and he also acts as the defensive barrier to prevent the opposition from mounting an attack. While Vorm has been a key player at the back for the Swans, he has been known to exaggerate his dives just a little, to make a simple save look extraordinary. With Britton, there is no exaggeration. What you see is what you get, which is one of the hardest working midfielders in the business with a fantastic pass rate and a calm under pressure that is refreshing to watch for someone who has played in all four divisions for Swansea.
hard to call - for the opposition to win they have to score more and vice versa, if vorm kepps a clean sheet he is, if not its the creators of the goals that are how about all 14 are equally important, total copout i know
The reality is that while vorm is really important for us, he can't score goals, so can't win us games directly, yes his saves can be the difference in 0 points or 3 points, and that is great but for me the team wins or loses as a team, so the credit should go to all of them.
He definitely makes some saves that are for the cameras but I'd say he arguably is (along with Leon) the most important as he will be the hardest to replace if injured/suspended. The aim for any side is to have substitutes who are not significantly worse than the first team, I feel we're getting there with most positions but I hope we don't have to find out whether Tremmel can cut it in the Premier League.
Vorm is going to be our most important player this weekend. United will hit the target, they always do. If he can keep a clean sheet and calm, slow things down at the right time then we can build something and look to win the game. There is nothing like playing in front of a keeper who you know is so good that he can't be beat from distance and has the ability to pull off remarkable reflex saves from the League's top forwards closer in. Confidence begins with that foundation, and with confidence the rest of the team can relax an execute. He wasn't at his best against Chelsea, but since then has proved remarkable and he's just going to get better.
Vorm is probably the best value for money signing in the league, but I would say (predictably) that Leon is more important. If Leon wasn't so good at keeping the ball, Vorm would be a lot busier. Leon is our most important player this staurday, because we need to keep the ball away from the opposition as much as possible. Vorm will always have to make saves against Man U, but if Leon doesn't control the game like normal, we will get battered. You can't buy the understanding of our game that Leon has, whereas you can buy a replacement keeper.
