Manchester United's Michael Owen is set to be out until at least Christmas with the thigh injury he sustained in the 2-0 win against Otelul Galati.

The England forward, 31, lasted 10 minutes before suffering the problem in the build-up to United's opening goal.

"Michael has a thigh muscle injury and will be out for six weeks or so," a club spokesman told manutd.com.

According to the club, Owen will be unavailable until Boxing Day at the earliest when Wigan visit Old Trafford.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Newcastle player has rarely featured in United's league games this campaign and his current contract expires at the end of the season.

Why is he even still there? Surely they'd rather play Welbeck or another young player ahead of him in the League Cup etc.

You'd think they'd prefer to have Welbeck starting anyway. Much more likely to put a full shift in than Owen. Looks a really good player and always looks dangerous.

Normally I wouldn't be happy anybody got themselves injured..but on this occasion I can make an exception.

Did anyone see him biting back at fans calling him a traitor and how his career is coming to an end?

It was on twitter the other night.

Is it wrong that I assumed this would be a Marveaux update?

Probably, he's no more injury prone than half of our players.

Didnt necessarily mean that in a good way, we have a few injury prone players.

Fergie must be sitting looking through the brochure thinking "this was never mentioned"

Seriously though Owen has done a good job for them. Not very glamourous but I'm sure this was always Fergies intentions. Wish him well, doesn't deserve the **** he gets from our fans for me.

Agreed. The treatment he gets from Newcastle fans is ridiculous.
